As usual with WD drives, the hardware is solid. I just hate the archaic lock software on PC. You have no easy way to toggle different computers to auto unlock without password. It's been YEARS and still doesn't work right. You have to remove the password and can only autounlock 1 computer, usually. It should be a simple toggle after typing in the password, and then possible ask for the password again or some second measure per computer. The software needs to be updated. I NEVER buy a WD drive without hardware encryption, but the software behind it lacks, always. WD, HIRE some good people to refresh this and make more options and make it user friendly.
I would recommend this to a friend!

The external drive was easy to install and connect. The only issue I have with it is that it is noisy when operating. At first I thought that something was wrong, but it was working fine, just making noise.

If you are going to use this device with a Mac, you (may) need to contact WD technical support to guide you through reformatting prior to use. The reformatting process is logical, but can not be installed using the internal Mac disc utilities, you will need to install WD's download and use tech support to help make this a quick and easy process. This device, ( of which i purchased two) an 18TB My Book, will be used here as back up to my 48TB G Raid 4 bay Shuttle. I do not use the cloud for storage and would prefer to house my own back up. My digital life began with an ever increasing number of By Book's in the 1990's, and then migrated everything to G Drive storage. What I have done now, in this purchase is consolidate 12 G drives into, 1 48 TB G 4bay shuttle and 2- 18 TB My Book drives to bring of my storage needs up to date, with space available for adding data for a few years to come. This series of recent purchases represents my continued loyalty and trust in the performance reliability of products from WD for well over two decades.

After I plugged this into my target system (Windows 10), the system simply cannot boot up. If I unplugged it during booting and then plug it in afterward, then it works fine. This also boots OK in another system that I tried. Checking the various forum, some suggest to change it from exFAT to NTSC. Once I did that, then it boots fine. It is still a mystery what that disk format make. Anyway, back to the disk, it is certainly loud on booting and disk access. You can hear the clicking even if you are 10 ft away and it is much louder than the 10TB Element that it replaced. Since this is a drive for backup (meaning it is not accessed unless I run the backup software), I can tolerate it. I also put a piece of foam padding underneath to dampen the noise.

Have had good experiences with WD products in the past. This one is very noisy and constantly making a clicking noise which is very distracting. Not sure if this is normal. I'm concerned that the unit is not functioning properly and will eventually fail when it is out of warranty. Somewhat disappointed with this purchase.

Hi VJF0,
We are sorry to hear that the WD My Book Desktop External Hard Drive is not working as expected and thank you for bringing this concern to our attention.
Please know that the external drive makes noise during normal drive operation. The type and volume of noise are dependent on whether the is drive performing a read/write operation or idle with the heads parked. The environment where the drive is functioning may also influence noise. It is important to recognize which noises indicate trouble or normal drive operation. If the drive is not getting an uninterrupted power supply from the adapter then it could cause the drive to make noise. Please refer to the WD support page to know more.
"How To Tell If The Noise or Sound An Internal Drive Makes is Normal": Search for knowledge base article: 16309
"A Western Digital hard drive makes a repeated clicking noise every 5 seconds": Search for knowledge base article: 14842
The best practice is to run diagnostics with WD Drive Utilities when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We recommend avoiding USB hubs for external hard drives and therefore connect the drive directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. Please refer to the WD support page to know more.

We would like to follow up with you to help discover the root cause of your drive’s abnormal behavior. We suggest you contact our Support team by phone with reference to this review to ensure an overall good experience with Western Digital. We'd be happy to help.

Extremely underwhelming...

I cannot fathom why anyone would make a USB 3.0 device, then cram a junk 5400rpm drive in it...but here it is. This thing is SO slow. I bought the 18TB model, and actually filled it almost completely up with backup data....only took several days to do so, which is not acceptable for me. This drive is also extremely noisy, and sounds like it is grinding, so it will be for backup only, and not ever hold any critical information. I only bought this drive because it was inexpensive, but I should have known better, so that's on me. On another note, this thing is not compatible with Roku, which only decreases its usefulness that much more. Also runs considerably warmer than my other drives from another vendor...
