OK drive, mediocre speeds, does not work with WD software? Yes, does not support their WD drive utility which allows for setting or disabling the sleep timer. A real pain when the drive requires 15 seconds to re - startup every 1/2 hr. of idle time, increased pc boot and shutdown times. If the software worked with it, this is no longer a problem. But it's cheaper.

Can't Disable Sleep on Drive, Sleeps Constantly
on May 27, 2021

No utility to stop the drive from sleeping, as there is for other WD drives. Get ready to have it slowly spin up and lag your system every time you use it, which is a nightmare if you need to use it frequently like I do. Could be a great product but borders on unusable if you intend to use it frequently. Also "12 TB" turns out to be less than 11 TB free space.

Hi levi,
We are sorry to hear about your experience with WD 12TB Elements Desktop Device and appreciate your time providing this review and bringing this matter to our attention.
If your WD elements desktop drive is going to sleep then we recommend you try a different power adapter. Sometimes faulty power adapters can cause the same issue due to inadequate power supply. Moreover, regarding the less capacity you observed, Hard drive manufacturers use a calculating method different than how computers calculate figures, so there will be nominal differences. This is how hard drive manufacturers have been selling drives since day one. We agree that showing an accurate amount makes sense. Though 111.68GB hard disk probably isn't as easy to understand as 120GB.
For simplicity and consistency, hard drive manufacturers define a megabyte as 1,000,000 bytes and a gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes. This is a decimal (base 10) measurement and is the industry standard. However, certain systems define a megabyte as 1,048,576 bytes and a gigabyte as 1,073,741,824 bytes. These are binary (base 2) measurements.
This is why different utilities will report different capacities for the same drive. The number of bytes is the same, but a different number of bytes is used to make a megabyte and a gigabyte. This is similar to the difference between 0 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Fahrenheit. It is the same temperature but will be reported differently depending on the scale you are using.
