Gets Minor Tasks Done

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The mending machine is good to get minor mending done. It is really not that big or good for heavy duty items or even if you double some denim. It is easy to use and ideal for quick and easy fixes to fabric, but don't expect to make designer clothes' with it.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have had sewing machines before but they were large and heavy and I never did get the hang of them. My SINGER-M1000 Mending Machine is soooo great, it is light weight and comes with a very complete instruction manual and a on line site where you can go if you still don’t understand how to use. I did not need that. Very easy setup and fun to use. I fixed a seam on T-shirt and pj bottoms. Thanks Singer for making this machine.

Can Repair Light-Medium weight/Woven Fabrics Only!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received the Singer - M1000 Mending machine as a member of the Sew & Share program and tested it. Here is an honest review of my sewing experience:
When I saw the box, I was surprised of it's lightweight, small size. The mending machine is 10-1/2 in. long x 4-1/2 in. wide x 8-1/2 high. It is a very basic machine. It looks like a toy. You can travel with it inside of a briefcase. Then I read an email from Singer saying that it can only be used to mend lightweight and medium weight fabrics, close a shirt seam, and fix cuffs. But I can't hem and topstitch jeans or make an entire sewing project with it. And I wondered how long this machine is going to last? Because it sounds low quality.
Never-the-less, I decided to hem a t-shirt and mend some medium weight pants. The instruction book is illustrated and very understandable. A first time beginner can learn this machine! There isn't a lever to push down the feed dogs; so hemming stretch fabrics would be difficult. That's why I chose woven fabrics. The hardest part was putting the thread through the needle. I wish ALL Singer sewing/mending machines had the new semi-threader technology. The foot switch was a little too fast for me. But it's not a major design flaw. Hemming my t-shirt went smoothly until the thread came-out of the needle for some mysterious reason. Then I had to re-thread the machine, which resulted in slightly crooked stitches upon restart. Then the light flickered off. I stopped the foot switch the split second it turned-off; and the light turned-on, again. I adjusted the tension of the thread thinking maybe it was too tight. The instruction book does illustrate how to properly tension the thread. Overall, it's a good machine for anyone who only sews when their clothes are ripped or needs hemming. Though its durability is questionable, since you can't sew an entire project with it.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The SINGER® M1000 mending machine is easy to set-up, small, very lightweight, yet grips the table for stability and is quieter than my Singer Confidence 7363. A size 14 needle for woven fabrics, (not stretch fabrics) is already inserted in the machine and ready to be threaded. The machine comes with a bobbin wound with polyester or poly/cotton white thread.
The BIG surprise is that there is not an ON/OFF switch!
(My solution to the lack of an on/off switch was to use a power strip to plug the AC adapter into and use the on/off switch of the power strip to turn the sewing machine on and off rather than unplugging the AC adapter.)
Here is some irony: The AC adapter must be plugged in for the LED light to turn on, or unplugged to turn the LED light off. The manual’s instructions are to unplug the AC adapter before attempting to thread the machine; however, the LED light is needed to be able to see to thread the machine! Better have another table lamp handy for threading.

The Singer M1000 get started threading instructional video on You Tube is excellent! The instructor explains while showing the technique in a close-up view. If you are new to sewing, this video is a must to watch prior to using the M1000. The instructor begins with removing the bobbin in the bobbin case, showing clearly the package to purchase the correct bobbin, (which is the Class 15 Transparent), winding thread onto a new bobbin, correctly inserting the newly wound bobbin into the bobbin case, threading the machine, and sewing using a straight stitch.
NOTE: Your M1000 may NOT have a needle bar thread guide like the one in the video. Mine is not like the one in the video so there was no way for the thread to be brought from the left side of the needle bar thread guide to the right. My only option: insert the thread from the right behind the needle bar thread guide, then thread the needle.
Threading the needle with the finger guard in place was a challenge, so I removed it. Even after removing the finger guard I could not get the Needle Threader to fit through the eye of the needle. Instead, I used the small square of white paper that came with the machine located under the presser foot on top of the needle plate as an aid in threading the machine. Lift the presser foot; remove the square of white paper; raise the needle to its highest point by turning the hand wheel towards you; with your left hand, hold the small square of white paper directly behind the eye of the needle, so that the hole of the needle is clearly seen against the white paper. With your right hand, guide the thread through the eye of the needle. Save white paper for future use.
I did replace the finger guard to experience what it would be like to sew with it, since this is a new feature for me. Make sure that the washer is against the screw when reattaching the finger guard. Pay attention to the detail of the drawings in the manual and the Singer get started videos.

The stitch settings are preset. A description of the 32 Essential Stitch Applications are available to download or print from this website https://www.singer.com/m1000-mending-machine-0 . and details the many ways to use the following stitches: Straight Stitch - with options for different stitch lengths and needle positions; Zigzag - wide, medium and narrow sizes; Multi-step Zigzag - for elastic insertion, seam finishing, or decorative stitches; Blind hem Stitch - for blind hemming. This is a quick lesson for each of the stitches available with the M1000. This 6 page English version is not included in the manual that comes with the M1000, therefore, print it out or download it to your desktop for a much needed and excellent reference. The dial to set the stitch was slightly confusing upon first glance, but once I watched the M1000 or M1005 get started videos from Singer, it clarified the main 4 stitch settings leaving the others easy to discern using the manual.
The sewing area is so small that it would be difficult to construct a garment or other large item with this machine even if it were to be made of lightweight fabric. It would be great if the M1000 offered the optional extension table like the M1005.
The dainty foot pedal controls the needle movement and the feed dogs and the speed is FAST. Hence the finger guard for your protection. Fast speed does not mean heavy duty application. The website and manual clearly state: For thicker fabrics and more applications, a full-size machine would be recommended. I tried to do a simple straight stitch repair on a thin, terrycloth wash cloth but the terry cloth would not advance because the feed dogs were not designed to work with that type of nap or that weight of fabric.
I was successful using it for mending and sewing face masks of quilting cotton, repairing a seam line tear on the slick lining fabric (acetate) of a jacket, repairing the casing for a bra, blind hemming a café curtain of lightweight cotton, and attaching seam binding at the hemline of a lightweight cotton apron, pressing it under, then hemming.
Also I pieced together 4 3/8" quilting cotton squares to make triangles, just to see if I could run them through the machine as I have seen done on quilting shows. Yes! This machine is so fast it would certainly have a designated place in the sewing room of a Quilter. After changing the regular point needle to a ball point needle for sewing stretch knits, I repaired a shoulder seam of a favorite cotton knit t-shirt, then hemmed both sleeves since they had long ago lost their hem.
Also I pieced together 4 3/8" quilting cotton squares to make triangles, just to see if I could run them through the machine as I have seen done on quilting shows. Yes! This machine is so fast it would certainly have a designated place in the sewing room of a Quilter. Although the Singer M1000 has its limitations, for a seamstress that can no longer hand sew due to disability or loss of dexterity; or for someone who only needs to mend or use for small projects and applications as I did, the Singer M1000 is a good option for simpler sewing tasks at an affordable price and will suffice nicely!

The little machine that could

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is the machine that I did not know that I needed, but now I wish that I'd always had! This machine is NOT a toy, and not a beginner's machine, but rather another valuable tool that should be in any sewist's arsenal. I am not lucky enough to have a dedicated room for sewing where I can leave a sewing machine set up all the time (honestly, many of us don't right?) and there are so, so, so many little things that I put off because it means clearing space and carrying and setting up the big machine. I have small mending jobs; new fabric that needs to have the ends finished so that I can wash it before cutting; small jobs like hemming; little craft projects; and the "honey, can you do this for me?" type things. Last weekend I travelled to my elderly father's home and he really, really needed custom curtains for his odd, awkward windows. He doesn't have my mother's machine any more, and I dreaded lugging my big machine with me. He just needed sheers for those odd windows and this machine was PERFECT for that!
I'm sure that some people will see the price point on this and think that this is a good choice for someone learning to sew, or for someone who just wants a full sized machine on the cheap. This is a great little machine, but don't set yourself up for disappointment -- this is not a machine that can be forced or mistreated. But if you know how to use a sewing machine and respect its limitations, and use it for what it's intended, it really is great to have.
I can pick it up with one hand (!!!!) and leave it on a side table. I can carry it in a grocery bag or simple tote bag. I've already gotten through a pile of mending and hemming that's been waiting for so long.
And now, I've gotten a ton of fabric that's been sitting around -- end stitched (to prevent ravelling) and washed (and preshrunk) -- and NOW I can get down to real sewing.
And now ..... I'm eyeing that drawer of fabric that I've collected thinking it would be perfect for quilts (okay -- I admit, there's two drawers and a tub) and FINALLY going to get back into cutting and piecing, because I know I can set this up on my little portable desk and work on piecing quilts while I'm watching TV in the evening.
