How excited can one be over a toner cartridge purchase. It works fine but I'm disappointed that I can no longer get 27X cartridges from HP.

I'm sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the page yield. It does seem like you should have gotten more copies, but it is hard to know for certain.
The estimates of pages printed are based on industry standards. How the cartridge will perform in real life situations will vary quite a bit.
A high-density print (like a photo or a graph) will use the toner more quickly than text, Using the draft setting on your printer can help page yield.
If the problem appears to be a defective cartridge, you can contact HP support for a replacement: hp.com/contactHP

My 1999 HP2100 ceased to operate and parts are no longer easily available. I purchased the new printer because I use a black and white printer as well as an HP 400 laser color printer. However, one of the intents of the new black and white printer was to be able to print data onto my checks to make payments and to deposit checks, by franking them on the reverse side. This cannot be done. I have tried to slow down the printer but to no avail. So, check paper goes flying in and becomes entrenched in the mechanism. I still need to be able to print checks. Any suggestions? As for the printer as a great black and white for 8.5 x 11 sheets, it is EXCELLENT.
