I recently got a Coast G450 flashlight to replace my damaged Coast HP550 flashlight. The G450 is a new flashlight by Coast and it is replacing the now discontinued HP550. In short, I really like the new G450. I'm going to compare the HP550 and the G450 for my review.
Here's a list of the topics ill talk about. Just skip to the corresponding number to what you want to read.:
1) The one thing I don't like about the G450.
2) Comparing the focusing mechanism of both lights
3) Brightness of both lights
4) Battery configuration and details about the differences
1) Even though i love the G450, i have to mention its downfall. The flashlight feels a bit cheaper in quality when compared to the HP550. It dosen't have the raw heft the HP550 has and its tail switch has a more mushy feeling to it opposed to the satisfying positive click of the HP550. That's the only negative I'd give it.
2) The focusing mechanism has been changed. In order to focus the HP550, you would first twist counter clockwise (when the light head is facing up towards you) to unlock the head with a click indicating it being in the unlocked position. Then, you would slide the head up or down to the desired beam pattern. Once there, you would twist the head clockwise (when the head of the flashlight is facing up towards you) in order to re-lock it with a click indicating it was locked. With the new G450, you just spin the head clockwise or counterclockwise until you reached the desired beam pattern.
3) The brightness has increased from 1075 lumens on the HP550 to 1400 lumens on the G450.
4) They both run on AA batteries, but their battery configurations are a bit different. The battery tube is smaller now on the G450 where it used 6 batteries instead of 9 for the HP550. One thing to note though is that it uses 3 separate rowes of 3 AA batteries connected in series. The 3 rows are connected in parallel totaling 9 batteries. This means that you can run the HP550 on only 3 batteries if you absolutely have to. With the G450, all 6 AA batteries are connected in series. The configuration is 3 rows with two batteries in each row. Meaning, that you have to put in all 6 batteries or the light won't work. Another note. The battery tubes on both the HP550 and the G450 are reversible. So, it doesn't matter which end you put in first.
5) Even with the battery tube shrinking, the overall size isn't much smaller. Maybe a little over an inch shorter. But, the diameter is just about identical.
6) The tail cap has been given a makeover. On the HP550, there was a pretty large protrusion off the side of the end cap for a wrist strap to be attached. On the G450, the end cap now just has a small hole drilled through the side for a wrist strap to be attached to. The new tail cap design streamlines the lower body of the light and makes it all a consistent diameter. The protrusion on the HP550 also acted as a roll away stop the light from rolling away. But, I haven't noticed much issue wit it missing on the G450.
7) The knurling on the G450 is much finer and allows for a positive feeling grip on the light. Plus, the head also has knurling where as the HP550 has no knurling on the head. The G450 also comes in two colors. Black and grey. I personally love the grey as is it more of a darker gun metal grey.
8) In conclusion, I would highly recommend this light to anyone looking for a quality yet affordable flashlight. I've been using Coast flashlights for about 5 years now and i have put them through a lot. I absolutely love their lights. There is just nothing else out there like them.

I love your very durable flashlights and your life time warranty, but you replaced myself HP550 with a smaller model G450. I expected the same model or similar. Thank you for replacing my wonderful flashlight. I will always be a loyal Coast customer.

An awesome product that goes with me on my nightly dog walks. Solid product but not heavy at all. Buying more for family for the Christmas season. Thanks again for a quality product that outshines your competition.

Excellent flashlight...bright and well built...only improvement would be a 3 position switch but wouldnt be easy i know. Having to click thru hi medium and low to get back to high beam is a bit annoying

This is a replacement to another coast light. The other worked great at first and then went bad with corrosive batteries. Love this light so far. Adjustable, powerful seems like a great light. Just need to wear out some batteries with it to see if worth 5 stars. If batteries can be replaced I’ll buy another one of this same model.

Got this unit as a warranty replacement due to the fact that I could not remove the batteries on my older Coast. Seems like they didn't change the design much, so sure hope it doesn't happen again.
