Why is everything so small?

My first computer monitor was a 13inch television. Set on channel 3 with an adapter wired to the antenna input. Over time it has been replaced many times with what was the current standard CGA, VGA, SVGA etc. I would simply plug them in and view. This is my first higher resolution monitor. There were no instructions for how to adjust my computer to display text large enough to read. Including suggestions on where to find directions on what settings to change and how to do it would be a great benefit to us older users.
