We owned one of these mixers for almost a decade and loved it. We finally had to replace it because the pitcher was leaking at the bottom. The new blender releases a very bad odor when we run it. The smell is like burning plastic or oil. The blender functions OK, but we are hoping the smell doesn't mean there's something seriously wrong with this product.

Hi there! The behavior you are experiencing is completely normal for a newer machine. Although all motors are tested at the Vitamix production facility, heavy use will cause further curing of the motor windings. This curing gives off a burning smell and is typical for wound motors. This smell will quickly dissipate after a few more heavy uses.
In addition, the Vitamix motor is designed to protect itself from overheating. Sometimes the machine may emit a burning odor and/or stop temporarily because its thermal protector sensed that the machine was about to overheat. If this occurs, we recommend turning the power switch off for up to 45 minutes, allowing the machine to cool down or reset. To avoid overheating your machine in the future, be sure to ramp the machine up to the highest speed within 5 seconds of turning it on to activate the cooling fan in the motor.
I ordered the Vitamix 5200. As a previous Vitamix owner I am a bit disappointed in the new mixer. The basis light weight and moves around when mixing. Also I tried mixing pancake batter as my first mix and it wouldn't mix it at all because I put the powder in first. I loved my old Vitamix that is still running after 25 years but I had given it to my son. The new ones don't compare. Still not sure I will keep it.

It is important to remember that all full-size Vitamix blenders are equipped with either a 2 or 2.2 horsepower motor, which moves the blades in the container at a high speed in order to pulverize the ingredients completely. On occasion during blending, especially with thicker mixtures like hummus, frozen desserts and nut butters, you may experience some excess movement/vibration from the motor base on your countertop. This is a result of the machine trying to move the blades through such a dense recipe at the same high speeds.
When this happens, the best thing to do is to first make sure you have your blender on the highest speed setting featured on that unit. Next, place your hand firmly on the lid of your container to steady it while you use your tamper to work the ingredients through the blades. This will help to create an easier flow of the ingredients in the container, which will also help to lessen the vibration. Please keep in mind that certain ingredients and recipes are thick or denser in nature, and some movement while blending is normal.
Taking your machine to high speed within the first 5-7 seconds will not only help with vibrations, it will also keep you machine from overheating and turning off on you. If you need further assistance with your unit, please call us at 1-800-848-2649.
I do not recommend the Vitamix 5200. The Automatic Overload Protection shutoff is triggered almost every time I use the machine. I've read the manual, follow the directions, and it still shuts off automatically to "protect the motor from over heating". To start it up again, you have to unplug the machine and blow on the motor. It can take 45 minutes to restart. It's ridiculous and a waste of money.
Very happy with my purchase of 5200. Makes the smoothest smoothies ! And I’ve been cooking more. Easy to use and clean. No removable blades to be concerned about. I keep it on counter and it’s ready to use.
Pros: Durability, Easy to use, Product features, Power
Grinds veggies/smoothies well but spout needs work

I own three Vitamix and missed the narrow container because I feel it grinds smoothies better as the blades have less room at the bottom. My 20 yo one was THE best of all (4 total) as the motor was super heavy duty and the canister never really 'aged'. But eventually the gears wore out:( THIS model? PROS: 1. Grinds well most everything I put in it. CONS: 1. As with most of the newer/redo models, the pour spout is far Inferior to the older models and goes over the sides when pouring a full container. For ? reasons they have changed the shape of this area. When you have a full container and try to pour it out? I have to go super slow because it will flood over the sides overflowing the 'spout' area. The old models NEVER had this problem. Too bad. 2. The container scuffs and becomes coated with ALL Vitamix's. By now you guys should have come up with a BPA FREE, better quality plastic for this! I use vinegar and baking soda in HOT water and whirl it for a long time (hot!!!) to finally get that film off. UGH.

Hello. We thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. We will certainly pass it along to our team. For our containers, we use Eastman Tritan a well-known, BPA-free plastic recognized for its long-lasting properties and durability. It is trusted by hundreds of companies and renowned for its performance in rigorously tested, food-safe products worldwide. We also still produce the 5200, the machine that comes with the taller container that you are used to using, we have kept that product over the years as it is still a favorite among users. If we can assist you in any additional way, please call us at 1-800-848-2649.
