Ever since I had a Microsoft Band and was introduced to the smart sleep alarm it had where you can set a time you wan to wake up and if you come out of deep sleep within 30 minutes of that, you band would vibrate and easily wake you up. Well, like everything Microsoft, the haters gonna hate and it failed. I have been waiting YEARS for someone to buy or come up with that amazing technology. It seemed that Garmin finally invented their own. I have many Garmin devices and when I saw the Index, I was in.
I would say it is not as smart as the Band as 99.5% of the time it would vibrate right when the alarm was set for. Statistically, that is impossible. Even still, I keep wearing it as I would rather be easily vibrated awake than hear some annoying alarm.
My reason for the 3 stars is because on about 3 occasions, every couple of months or so, I wake up and notice the time is AFTER my alarm. This is not an "I forgot to charge it and it died" issue because the app alerts me when it is low. I have noticed that the connection between the Index and the Garmin app seem to get lost. It still knows I have one, it just is unaware that it is on and has power. This happened again last night and I checked and nope, no connection. I see lights.
What I typically have done to fix it is to tell the app to forget device and then I reconnect/pair it and that seems to work... for a time.
I use a fenix as my daily wear and had been sleeping with it on, to capture my sleep metrics, which I find very valuable. However, wearing such a big watch to bed was quite uncomfortable at times, and I also ran into the challenge of when to charge it with minimal interruption to my all-day metrics. This product offered an ideal solution; I swap at bedtime and when I wake up, the IDM captures my sleep metrics, my fenix captures my awake metrics, and Connect combines them together seamlessly. My only gripe is that the hard plastic clip that is part of the band can be uncomfortable at times, depending on how I lay, and the band can slide all to one side of the clip as I sleep, loosening up the device. Minor, but still notable. All in all, I love it and am glad to have it in my arsenal of tools.
I have been using this a on nightly basis for a few months. It does an exceptional job of providing me with valuable data on my sleep. As a separate unit, specifically made for monitoring sleep, it provides more detailed information than sleeping with a smart watch.
Best part of the Sleep Monitor is when you are wearing it you don't even notice it, which is awesome. I also really appreciate all the metrics it produces and that has encouraged me to do a better job when it comes to my sleep which is so important in your overall health.
Great having this product since wearing a watch all the time is not that comfortable. The only reason I don't give this 5 stars is because I have had some days that it doesn't sync up the information from the night before, and also the sync sometimes takes for ever, which is very annoying when I have to leave fast.
Works pretty well and is easier to sleep with than my watch. You do have to give it about 5 minutes to sync in the morning when you take it off, but that's not hard. Reasonably accurate, too.
The syncing seems slow and inconsistent to the point where I wonder if it's ever going to sync in the morning, and then it finally does. The docs say that the best action is immediately setting it to charge after waking up, and I guarantee you that's a great way for it to never sync because it goes to sleep and only wakes up when unplugged.
Also, for a screenless device, I want to see live HR on the Garmin Connect app dashboard. It should also record steps taken at night. It should do a better job of detecting sleep/naps, especially for a dedicated sleep monitoring device.
