I have been using the Garmin 1040 Solar for almost a month now. (1030 for 6 years before) It is a nice upgrade. The new software menu is fine. The solar feature is ok, value of it depends on the user. I think the non solar is probably better value, imo. It does sync faster, connect wifi better, and the screen seems much better in daylight. It is a little quirky if you are trying to power off, it likes to go to sleep and not offer power off more often. Often it takes about 3 times holding to power button before the power off screen button shows. Difficult to tell max hours of power. Most of my rides are 2 - 4 hours. But if I don't connect to G Express/Connect for a few rides there are no concerns. If you ride multi day rides or multiple centuries it could really pay off.

Solar power

I love the use of the solar power panel energizing the Edge 1040. The visibility of the screen and accuracy of the street map display is concise, clear and pin point. The tool features are motivating to keep one training and I look forward to using the Edge 1040 Solar. A great new device!

Huge upgrades

Ridden this for 2 weeks now, and incredibly impressed. Obviously the solar charging us top notch, I can ride for 2+ hrs and only lose 3-4% on a sunny day. Even indoors the battery life is great, lasts about a week of 1-2 hr indoor rides every day. The setup was super easy, and even added all my sensors! The case overall feels much slimmer and sturdier than the 1030. Huge fan of the changes, while still keeping the familiar and stellar reputation of the 1000 series!

Excellent / Love Garmin

So far I charged it only once, so the battery is doing just fine, the color and the size of the number are a great plus. I had Edge 1030 before and this is a good upgrade. I did have an issue turning off the device but only twice, I just had to keep the off bottom pressed for some seconds.

A great piece for someone who wants to train and has a tough schedule with time. I can use it all week without charging… 20 plies hours of riding. It’s my go to!!!

Very Fast and the Battery Lasts

Love the new unit. Switched from an Edge 1030 and I cannot believe how quickly it starts up. I use a couple of lights and a radar and the lights set up quickly as well. I have used it 6 times and still have 79% battery so the solar really helps. I have one complaint. No support for the Varia Vision. I ride alone in the country most rides and not having the heads up view for radar alerts as well as ride data is missed. Please fix this!

Awesome the long the battery lasts with the little solar panels. Nice feature also where you can sees your stamina at the pase you are going, calculates your remaining kms.
Need software update, sometimes it does not tell you how much it is charging with sun, but that should be fixed with software.
