Solar Power really Works

I’ve logged about 100 miles so far with my 1040 Solar and my skepticism has been vanquished. I haven’t plugged it in to charge yet! Now I do ride in California BUT It is winter! So I can’t imagine that I’m getting optimal solar exposure so I expect even better performance after spring arrives. I upgraded from an Edge 1000 that I have used for years. The Edge 1040 Solar graphics are much clearer for this old man to read the mount is better the usb C is better my experience it’s that it’s just better all around.
First bike computer it’s great I was worried it would be to confusing to use but from the first ride it pretty much did everything I needed for me. Still learning all the features. Get the radar tail light to go with it also great to know people are coming from behind.
Have the 1030 plus and love it and think the solar option and added features would be great ! Like the map on it that shows your speed in different colors. The weekly mileage totals are great.
I'm in my 50's and my eyes aren't what they used to be. Reading this screen is significantly easier than on my 530. They also improved the ANT+ connection to lights. The 530 kept dropping the connection to my Bontrager Ion RT lights. This one has been rock solid. Haven't used the nav much because I'm riding locally, but I'm sure it will be handy later on. Battery life is great.
The was my first cycling GPS so the experience has been eye-opening! I use this both for indoor riding as well as road riding. I have yet to use it for MTBing but I'm looking forward to doing that.
The solar power alone was the main reason why I purchased it anyways. While it doesn't charge it as quickly as connecting it to an outlet/computer, that little bit of charge makes massive difference in its battery life. It's given me a lot of peace of mind when going on long rides!
Solar power aside, even though I don't ride as much as I'd like to, I didn't feel like I bought a GPS that has too many featurers I won't use. I've dabbled in the training plan for my indoor rides since I don't have a power meter, but I do have a smart trainer. I've also used its live-tracking feature for when I ended up caught in the dark and had to hitch a ride! I was also able to find out through its navigation features that there was a book shop within a rideable distance from me. Yes, I could have figured that out via Google but having a fun destination to go to made my fitness ride so much more enjoyable!
I had a 1030 that I thought was great, but the 1040 Solar is even better. The new user interface on the 1040 just works - much easier to go through menus. The screen resolution is great and love the USB-C charging port. All in all this is a great upgrade to an an already great device.
