Larger screen - luv touch screen & climb details

Haven't had many rides with the 1040S so far but my initial impression is that it is so much easier to view and navigate around the menus than the 530. Love all the more detailed climb info. I still have a lot to learn about all the new features. Looking forward to using it more as Winter turns to Spring. BTW - Also, impressed with how the solar adds battery life.

Better than expected

I knew this is their flagship model, packed with all the features, but I was still a little blown away with how much it really does. I've been a long time Garmin user and am impressed with the UI updates and features of the 1040 over previous models. Yes, you're practically riding with a big screen TV but the ability to see key stats at a glance outweighs the... weight. Living in an area with a lot of exposure, the solar charging seemed a good idea and after a 5 hour ride the battery was still at 93%. The climb pro automatically kicked on for a hill on route which was a nice surprise and the stamina feature is one I'll keep an eye on over time. Overall, I'm pretty impressed with this device.

This piece is excellent!
Very user friendly and when connected to the Garmin connect app it opens opens a vast array of metrics to help improve or maintain your fitness and the cycling dynamics is phenomenal!

A real upgrade

My Edge 1030 which I've had for some years, was beginning to fail, needing constant restarts, failing to work in cold weather, sometimes the battery wouldn't last the ride, so all in all the unit was generally no longer to be relied upon. Due to this experience I was a bit skeptical of getting another Garmin, but finally after a lot of research I opted for the Solar. I'm very happy with it so far. Much easier to program the screens, the battery life especially, is outstanding. My favorite thing is seeing a depiction of the route I'm about to ride on the opening screen, I no longer have to scroll through the lists of saved courses to find and select the right ride. The graphics are generally easier to read and I also like the enhancement to the rear radar alerts. The one piece that is missing, and why at one point I considered the Hammerhead very strongly, is the ability to see the profile of a climb when you're not following a preselected route. I would also have like a stronger indication of the next turn, on our night gravel rides it's a bit hard to see what's coming up because the text and the direction arrow is rather small. Generally I'm delighted with the new unit, and it seems like the integration with the Connect app is much better. I often had to restart the 1030 over and over again, turn bluetooth on and off on the phone and endure a lot of frustration trying to get it to synch. The App sees the 1040 almost immediately which is much better. All in all, so far, a great product.

Long time Garmin user. Frustration with inconsistent links to iPhone led me to experiment with Wahoo for the last year. The Wahoo feature set is much smaller but everything works as advertised. Returned to the 1040 Solar recently and have been very pleased. Links to the iPhone are stable, the screen is great and the device is fast. Solar charging is a huge benefit. Loading courses from Strava is easy and navigation on the 1040 works better than Wahoo.

The design elements and form factor have been elevated to a new place. The Charging port is much improved. The solar charging helps extend run time. The design is well thought out. The mounting system is much improved with a machined metal base, which eliminates the occasional problem that happened previously when a piece might break. Set up is much better, with a choice to migrate all prior device settings, if you like. Overall very well done. I am impressed.

The solar charging is awesome!!!!
I’ve riden 14 1/2hrs since I bought the 1040 Solar and my battery is at 83%. The font is much easier to read while cycling.
