Finally the right gear for me

Poor software, no waypoints.

Difficult to use, not at all intuitive. Does not allow waypoint files which makes it much much less useful for touring.

Super easy setup. Senses movement and prompts to start ride. Pauses ride timer every time you stop. Keeps track of hydration and calorie intake. Garmin Connect app tracks and maps and saves all rides. Solar power is ultra efficient. Battery life is beyond expectations. Aluminum connector is durable. USB C charging is fast and connector durable. Detailed specs and stats are motivating and keep you wanting to Beat Yesterday.

The touch screen on this vs the 820 is much improved, it provides capability to control music which was a long time request and the solar option is great!

Missing key feature

I bought the Edge 1040 to use as a mapping device for bike touring only to find out it does not load waypoint files. This is a severe defect in the computer that needs to be repaired. O would not recommend this computer for use on bike touring.

This thing is an on-bike cardio-fitness AI machine

I'm mightily impressed with the integration of HRV, Stress Score, Performance Condition, EPOC, and now, Stamina. Garmin and FirstBeat continue to lead the way on this stuff, and if we would just read and listen to our hearts, we might be able to stem the diabesity index and more over time.

I didn't expect to like it this much...

I've been a fan of the Edge 830 since its release and when the 1040 Solar was announced I was excited to see what features would trickle down to the 800 series. Instead, I wound up getting more in to following routes, training, and doing big dumb rides on my road and gravel bikes and decided to jump for a larger screen. This screen is unreal. The touch responsiveness is beyond any bike computer I've used, and I rarely charge the thing. The routing is top notch and if you make a route in Connect and create an event for the route, it automatically pops up on the computer.

I've only used my 1040 Solar a handful of times but very impressed with the navigation features & the battery life,I'm sure there's more to be learned.
