It does so much, but uses very little power. Nav's better than past models and the directions & climb mapping functions are exceptional. It could be more intuitive, espcially the connect IQ interface.
Battery and screen size for readability. Break you route files into state sized chunks or the the auto reroute will go into a never ending loop (can't handle the full Tour Divide route). Fast startup Battery life is great. Will need to charge every other day when riding 14-16 hours per day. Charges fast off a dynamo or battery pack. Has a ton of memory space for maps and route files. Would recommend !
I had the 1030 Edge and have seen a remarkable improvement in the 1040. I love the solar feature and also love the climb app that shows how far I have to go and the steepness of the upcoming sections.
I have been a long-time user of a Garmin Fenix for all of my workouts and was unsure if the 1040 offered enough functionality to justify the additional device. After using it for a few weeks, it was absolutely worth the investment. There is so much additional information available, and the charge lasts many rides (I charge every couple of rides, but have not gone below 80%). My sensors include my SRAM components and a Garmin HR chest strap. Everything worked flawlessly out of the box.
I have tried around 5 headunits in the past 3 years and this is by far the best one yet! I just completed a 240 mile ride with 18.5 hours of riding and 26 hours elapsed and I only used 55% of my battery and ended with 45% battery left! It charges even when its off and does a great job recording accurately with the new satellite technology.
This marks my fifth different Garmin head-unit over the years, and its great. Coming from the 1030, this does everything that did, but better, faster, and crushes in terms of battery life. I would highly recommend this unit for long distance cycling events, or if you just tire of charging stuff all the time.
