UPDATE: Bissell responded with a tip to open the air intake. Works like a charm now. Don't know why I didn't think of that myself, but thank you Bissell for responding. Opening that air intake has solved the area rug issue and now the machine works wonderfully. Definitely recommend and am in process of buying one for my parents which means yes, would definitely buy again.. Use Bissell pet hair eraser on hard and carpeted surfaces, plus on large area rugs. Do have heavy throw rugs with rubber backing but you CANNOT use this vac with or without beater bar on area rugs. With beater bar even on lowest suction the vac sucks in the carpet and machine shuts off. Without beater bar on you need Hercules to push it and it doesn't really suck up much of anything. Works great on everything but throw rugs hence the reason for 3 stars. Thankfully didn't pay full price for this machine or it would have only gotten 1 star due to cost vs surface multi-usage issues.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Some rugs with rubber backing can create strong suction resistance, even on the lowest setting. We recommend trying the vacuum with the airflow regulator slightly open to reduce suction and improve maneuverability. I just got the vacuum and immediately noticed that there is no on board place to store the crevice tool and small brush. This is a borderline deal breaker and I am considering returning the product without even plugging it in and turning it on. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT !l

Not a fan of canister vaccuums

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] While I felt this Bissell did an amazing job of sucking up all of my pet hair, I found the contraption to be clunky and clumsy. It doesn't have any intuition to maneuver corners or just follow my steps. The machine topples over. I don't want to be frustrated while I'm vacuuming!

Best designed vacuum I have owned in over 20 years!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love so many things about this vacuum. First and foremost, it has the best suction power of any vacuum I've owned over 20 years. I like the way you can adjust the suction when vacuuming area rugs. I also like that the retractable cord is long enough that I don't have to keep moving it around to different outlets on the main floor of house. The other thing that is great is the tangle free motorized floor tool. I used to spend time after each vacuuming cutting and pulling long hair out of all my other vacuums. This design is a plus for any household with family members that have long hair. The big wheels on it also make it easy to move about the floors even on carpet. This is the first Bissell full size vacuum I have owned in 30 years. I bought it because of how much I like my cordless Pet Lift Off stick vacuum. It's great for a quick clean-up of dog hair on my hardwood floors. Also the hand held corded Pet Eraser vacuum I bought years ago showed me the quality and ability to clean pet hair. I liked that one so much for cleaning dog beds that I got one for each of my 2 sisters who have 3 cats each. The Bissell carpet shampooing machine was the last Bissell product I bought about 6 months after moving into our new house. It's easy to use and does great job washing carpet. It was last November when I was vacuuming my carpets to shampoo them that my old vacuum died on me, prompting a search for best replacement. I went directly to Bissell, since I'd had good experience with other products. Customer service was also great, as I was having issues ordering online, and I called. They were very helpful. Product arrived at my house quicker than I expected. I have told so many about this vacuum and the only ones I can't convince are those that prefer upright. However last night my friend's vacuum actually died and I recommended the Bissell Power Lift Pet Rewind upright, which she got. I think she will be happy with it. I love my Bissell products!

It takes up a little more space in other words. Suction is excellent and the lights really make it easy to fine the dirt and cat hair.
