Let Down by Singer

I got this sewing machine in order to begin my learning for a fashion career. As my current work is judged on quality, I've been struggling due to the machine I've been using-- the Fashion Mate 3342. The machine I received never came with a manual, and the preset tension makes fabric difficult to work with while sewing. I've tried changing the fabric weight; sewing with different needle types and weights; getting the machine serviced; retrying rethreading (also using the automatic needle threader), and using various threads. However, without fail, the seams always pucker, and my work ends up looking quite subpar. It's quite hard to learn proper sewing techniques when the technical aspects of your machine are already improper! Part of learning fashion, I guess, is knowing what sewing machines to use.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Very poor machine

I bought this thinking that Singer, a formerly reliable company, would not put out a bad product. Unfortunately, I was wrong! No matter what number the tension dial is on, the stitching underneath is never right. The machine is plastic and difficult to take apart. We are told that the bobbin tension is preset at factory. Right now this machine is useless to me. Waste of money. I haveca Featherweight that is still working beautifully. So disappointed in Singer!!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

My singer fashion mate simply stopped working in less then a year. The machine was well cared for and not heavily used. I expected more from such a well known company. Needless to say it will be the last singer I waste my money on.

Replace my 40+ year old Singer Genie which rusted out with this machine. I did not need anything fancy, just the basics. This machine fits the bill perfectly and works about the same as my old machine. Love it!! Simple and easy to use.

Great until something goes wrong

Just tried to use my Singer the second time and the needle keeps hitting the plastic bobbin case for some reason. And the screws on the plate are impossible to take off because they are positioned in the most awkward place. Can't find any info out there on how to fix this.
