LIke except threader

I just purchased this machine after my older singer (50 years old) had the bobbin winder malfunction. No one knows how to fix this. Automatic bobbin winder was a dream. But the automatic needle threader is a nightmare!! I tried for 40 minutes to thread it automatically and gave up. I threaded it myself. If not for this "feature" I would love the machine. I did notice that the bobbin thread sometimes skips. Thankfully I'm not doing any heavy duty sewing.

This is my 2nd Singer, and probably my last. My last Singer was a Confidence 7470. I didn't use it on a daily basis, but to make a couple of full size quilts and a few baby quilts along with generalized mending at home. I stopped and was told it needed a new motor so I bought this one because I really didn't need all the extra options the previous had. Pros: The needle threader has to be held in place, vs it would stay with the Confidence. I had trouble with skipping stitches and the thread breaking. After making sure it was threaded correctly and using some extra recommendations by Singer I found out this machine is very picky. Compared to the other you must use the correct size of needle, and it really needs to be changed out. It's so picky you can't even use a needle one less size off. The instructions aren't clear to how to properly thread. I've seen 2 different instructions on where to end the threading before putting the thread in the needle. Also, the cord that attaches to the machine and foot pedal is too short compared to my other. Now I wish I would have went back and picked up that attachment. It works, but it really needs to be about 6 inches longer. It's also very loud. Even with a brand new needle and the correct thread. Oh yes, this is another thing. You must use better thread with this one or you'll be running into trouble as I had before with a dull needle, which really wasn't that dull. I had only used it for one project, and it was a Singer needle. I've had a Brother before. This will be my next purchase. I even had the lady at the repair center tell me that Singer isn't built like they used to be.

I purchased this machine almost 3 years ago and has had a great experience with it. I have made several jackets, dresses and other handy items, craft projects and it is wonderful everything looks professionally made. It is a basic machine that does quality work. I would recommend the fashion mate 3342 to everyone, especially beginners. Its a gem at an economical price.

Aweful from start to finish. Everything threaded with ease but the back stitching is awful awful awful. I went from a brother to a singer and I'll be going back. Maybe I am just used to my other but this was nothing but a headache.

Great little machine that does most everything

I've had this machine about 3 years. I had just returned to machine sewing after 25 years, and was amazed at how much easier they are to use these days! There was a bit of a learning curve to get the hang of it all again, but this machine is so easy to use, and the Singer videos so helpful, that it didn't take too long to get going. It threads so easily, the bobbin winding is quick and reliable, the bobbin case location is genius. I takes a bit of practice at first, but the auto needle threader makes threading quick and simple for my aging eyes. I've sewn 4 layers of canvas, as well as delicate chiffon and everything in between. Just make sure to use an appropriate needle for your fabric, and this machine can handle it. I've changed out the presser foot numerous times for specialized uses, and it's a snap to do. There are more types of stitches than I will ever use. It's fairly quiet, but it is a mechanical device with moving parts, so it's not silent. I made a lightly cushioned pad to place under it on my wooden sewing table to help absorb some of the vibration. I do the recommended maintenance, which isn't much, and it is simple to do. My only complaint is that the foot pedal can be a little sticky and finicky to control if I don't have my foot positioned in exactly the right way on it, and it has a slick plastic bottom so it slides on a hardwood floor. I have had no problems with it in three years of moderate use. Every time I use it, I'm impressed by the high quality at such a reasonable price. Even if it stopped working tomorrow, it has more than paid for itself.

Good sewing machine for beginner and home use

I'm a first time machine sewer, I use the 3342 for light home sewing. I love the sturdy feel, design and overall look of the machine and, general ease of use. It is very easy to thread and I mastered it on the first day. I haven't done many projects, but so far I haven't had many problems, and I must say those I've had (balling thread and fabric below feed dogs) so far were from my not selecting the appropriate settings, and were easily resolved. The light is very bright, It is also very quiet and I like that I'm able to sew slowly if I choose to. Overall I like this average-good machine, and hope it will last my 1 year warranty and beyond. Cons: - No "sew easy" foot because of my territory despite more expensive product cost... I don't get that. - Singer should consider placing simple things like... metal shanks and external parts, button release snap on presser feet, and enable lowering of feed dogs on all their machines as a standard. - Spanish instructions only... had to download and print English ones. - Instructions in the manual could be more extensive as it relates to stitch settings, instead of a separate stitch guide for download... would reduce many problems encountered especially for the beginner target market.

I signed my 8 yr old granddaughter up for sewing classes and another girl in the class had this machine and it looked really nice and easy to use, so I bought my granddaughter one and one for myself. Really easy to set up and use. My granddaughter really likes hers and is loving learning to sew. The machine is pretty quiet, threads really easy and is pretty quiet. I would highly recommend this machine.

I am a beginner and this is the perfect machine to begin my sewing adventure on. I took a sewing 101 class at Joann and she taught us how to troubleshoot and prevent "clanking." I loooooove this machine.
