I love this size and I love this shape especially for roasting chickens or baking a boule of sourdough bread. You have enough room to add your vegetables in with the chicken, which is a huge plus. For baking bread the cast iron is perfect because it conducts heat so well, and retains the heat. The spikes under the lid collect moisture and self-baste whatever dish you are baking or roasting in the oven, all while it is cooking, so almost like you have an extra hand! You get to take all the credit though! Bread does come out perfect when baked in a staub and your chickens will come out juicy and golden brown.
Staub never disappoints in my household, but this new color is one of our favorites. It is so bright (but not too bright) and presents so well. Of course it browns perfectly, and is perfect at moisture locking when cooking too.
My new sister in law is a burgeoning chef. She has never really used a dutch oven and I thought about getting her a smaller one to start. Then I realized that it would be better for her to learn to use it with us and my parents over for dinner so, of course the 7 qt was the perfect size. And it's my favorite size too. She loves it so much she keeps it out on her stove top all the time, The cherry is a perfect splash of color in her boring beige kitchen.
If you have never used or owned a Staub oven, then it is time. I started using them about 11 years ago. And it makes my life easier. I literally toss a piece of meat or pieces of chicken, add a seasonings (I always include onion, garlic, salt and pepper) some liquid (usually a combo of canned tomatoes, chicken stock and wine), put it in the oven and cook for an hour or two. Done! Happy family!
The 7qt is terrific for a larger family. I usually use the 5 qt for 3 people. My 7qt, which I have in grenadine, is pulled out for larger groups and special occasions.
I love Staub and this 7 quart is my favorite pot for Sunday dinner. A family of 9 requires a lot of food. This browns meat, sautes vegetables and can go into the oven for hours. It has a self basting lid, aka "dimples", that create a rain forrest in your pot. You get some incredible flavors even for dishes that don't require long cooking times. I use it on my glass cooktop with no problems whatsoever. I highly recommend the magnetic trivet to take your pot from the stove straight to the table. This is an heirloom piece that I'm sure my children will fight over when I'm gone.
One of my all time Staub pieces. The black matt finish produces magical food. The self basting spikes underneath the lid will intensify any flavor. The seal is so tight on this pan you could slosh it back and forth and nothing would escape.
We have a large family and use this to make one dish meals. Everything is always so flavorful and get lots of compliments on whatever I serve. I love that it's oven safe also.
