While the HP 8600 series is a reliable printer it does seem to use a lot of ink in the head cleaning process and certainly more than other printers. I'm now trying the 951XL / 950 XL cartridges to see how much longer it functions with these cartridges. For my personal computer I have therefore switched to a Brother which is rated as much more ink efficient and it seems to live up to it's reputation. The HP ink is very high quality and no complaints about printer quality and it does do everything including Fax; Print; Scans: Photos; Apps and memory cards so I suppose that gives value to the ink as it partners with a truly multi-functional quality printer. I don't think the ink is unreasonably priced and this ink and printer is one of the more efficient than some lasers that have very costly ink cartridges. Bottom line is the ink is above average and more cost efficient than some laser printers and cartridges it still is not the very best bang for your dollar. hope this helps.

Soooo much better than the ink we used to use. The HP 950XL color cartridges in the combo package last months longer! I used to be stingy when using color but not anymore. I find myself thinking when is this thing going to run out of ink? Another thing is the colors all seem to go about the same time with in a few days to weeks of each other which I kind of like. The new XL size for ALL of the colors including black all in one package is another great feature. If you take the time to figure out the pricing you will find you are getting a great deal that way too!

I think it is awesome that Staples always has my ink available. Home schooling has really increased my need to have readily available ink and paper. Staples is always there. My HP printer is an ink hog but I appreciate the XL version from HP. The XL version may cost a little more but that means I do not have to change cartridges as often. Highly recommended product from a highly recommended source Thanks Staples!
