Ink is used very quickly

I have an HP office jet 8600 print/fax/scan/copy/web machine. I find that it isn't as compatible as I expected with my NEW Toshiba lap top which I bought at Staples.(I do love Staples) but the ink for this machine seem to go rapidly. I do not do a lot of color copy more Black but the minute you change a black cartridge then it's magenta then it's the blue then the yellow it never ends until all are replaced. Replacement ink is also very expensive so I always buy two. Also seems to have a mind of its own because I try to save on paper too and print on both sides but it doesn't always work that way.

I like HP printers and am on my 4th one over many years but I do wish the ink was more reasonably priced since an owner has no options.
