I am extremely disappointed with the HP 218X Hi Yld Yll Toner W2182X and with HP as a company. The cartridge itself is outrageously expensive, and HP has intentionally locked their printers so you are forced to buy only their branded toner. Third party options that cost far less are blocked, even when they work perfectly well.
This feels like a cash grab, not customer care. The printer hardware was reasonably priced, but the long term cost of ownership is absurd once you realize you are trapped into buying HP toner at inflated prices. There is no technical reason for this restriction other than profit.
Print quality is fine, but it is nothing special or worth the premium. Plenty of other brands deliver comparable results without punishing customers at checkout. HP is prioritizing control and revenue over fairness and choice.
This is the last HP printer I will ever buy. I strongly recommend anyone shopping for a printer look at brands that respect their customers and allow affordable alternatives instead of locking you into overpriced consumables.
I bought the HP 218X High Yield Cyan Original LaserJet Toner Cartridge expecting a smooth, premium experience. Instead, it felt like I was paying extra to stay trapped. HP’s ecosystem makes it unnecessarily hard to use alternative toner that should work just fine, and that “only HP approved supplies” approach comes off less like quality control and more like customer control.
The bigger issue is the business model behind it. HP is effectively holding customers hostage by limiting which vendors can sell toner that will actually function in the printer. If HP wants loyalty, it should compete on quality and value, not by blocking competition and turning basic printing into a permission based system.
This was the last straw for me. Between the high cost and the feeling that HP is prioritizing lock in over customer respect, this is the last HP printer I’m buying.
All 4 toners are easy to install, work well, with accurate colors. Negatives are cost and erroneously told that my new printer would qualify for Instant Print which it doesn’t.
