Great AC / Heater as long as you understand its limitations

I have the Whynter-branded version of the Midea Duo and it works great! Its super quiet, sips electricity, can be run in on a much lower power setting if you have a small inverter generator, and it has a massive heat output to a point. The limiting factor to the heat output for ANY heat pump is where its cutoff point is. For the Midea duo and the rebranded versions, it is around 35f outdoor temperature. Heat pumps absorb heat from outside and pump it indoors. This means that the coil that absorbs heat from outside will struggle once it gets cold enough that water in the atmosphere will ice up the internals to the point where air cant pass through the coil. The unit is actually able to run what is called a defrost cycle to de-ice the coil but when it gets very cold out and the unit struggles to keep itself from icing up, it will become overwhelmed and is no longer able to keep up while still running efficiently and or supply sufficient heat. This unit is ideal for areas that don't super frequently have far below sub-ambient temperatures and have a back-up heat source like electrical baseboard heating or a boiler. It just requires a little bit of knowledge on what limits these from working but the fact that the unit is only using on average of 800w-1050w to generate about 3-4 times that in heat is amazing and will save you lots of money in the long run. Im even able to use this unit in Chicago because I will switch over to the boiler once I notice the unit shutting off, attempting to defrost too often, or the temperature starts to drop. What I would like to see is more control over is how and when the unit shuts off when it's too cold out. A push notification to tell me to switch over from my supplemental heat to my boiler would be nice and perhaps if i could tell the unit to simply not attempt a restart for heating for a set amount of time if its too cold out so it doesn't keep restarting the compressor for no reason.

If ERCOT made a cooler/heater combo.

Just like in Texas the cooler won't work well or at all once it gets hot, and the heater won't work once it gets cold. If somehow you live where it never goes above 80 and never below 45 degrees then it will work fine. I however live in the real world where a vast majority of places either get to the 100s in the summer, below freezing in the winter, or above 80 and below 40 depending on the season. As a result, this unit is terrible. Luckily the AC worked during the end of summer when temps were below 80, unfortunately it didn't work in august when it was in the 90s. Now that it's November we tried to use the heater when it's snowing out and it won't do anything. Because again, heating is for when it's cold but "not like, that cold." The AC is also for when it's hot just "not like, that hot." Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. Maybe even buy two separate units from a company that doesn't commit false advertising by vaguely placing the operational temperature ranges in 1 location that 99.9% of consumers won't find until after purchase and they wake up shivering as the heater stopped working. Shady business, horrible product. Would never recommend unless you live in a fantasy world where temps never exceed "hot but not that hot and cold but not that cold."

Awesome unit.

I purchased this about 2 months ago as a backup in case my 22 year old central air went out and also to have an air conditioner that I could run my 2250 watt generator with if we lost power for any length of time. When I plugged the unit into my killawatt power tester, the unit was pulling between 500 and 700 watts of electricity. This is well within the load that my generator will handle. The unit actually does a good job of cooling our 1300 sq. ft. house when the outside temperature is 95 degrees. The inverter varies the compressor. When I first start the unit up, the temperature of the air coming out will be about 40 degrees. As the temperature in the living space is lowered closer to the unit setting, the temperature of the air coming out gets closer to 50 degrees and the killawatt usage gets down to about 500 watts. This unit is very efficient. I couldn't believe how good of a job it could do in cooling my whole house. The bedrooms at the back of the house are not as cool as the area where the unit is installed, but I can live with them being a little warmer. My only nit pick would be that the unit does not control the humidity as good as the central air does. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this unit and would buy it again in a heartbeat.

Major design flaws

What good is a heater that won't heat when it's cold? Seriously, though, it only works when it's over 40 degrees Fahrenheit. I've also had to take apart both units I own to reconnect the internal drain lines so water would actually drain out. Before fixing them, one unit leaked all over the floor, and the other had constant P1 errors and would shut off, even though I had hoses hooked up to the drain ports. It's a very poor design for one of the priciest portable AC/heaters on the market. When they work, they work great, but they haven't worked when I need them the most.

GREAT PRODUCT - HORRIBLE instructions/manual.
on August 14, 2025

from Washington, DC
The instruction manual is HORRIBLE.
1st glaring oversight: Instructions for "DRY operation" <Page 10 of manual>
• Press the “MODE” button until the “DRY” indicator light comes on. /• While in this mode, you cannot select a fan speed. The fan motor operates at AUTO speed./• Keep windows and doors closed for the best dehumidifying effect.
Notice that there is NO mention of the fact that the user should disconnect the duo hose. Evidently this maybe a requirement based on various chat groups dedicated to the Midea Duo.,
There is section in the manual : Water Drainage on page 17 that shows a picture of the unit with the hose retracted into the cradle with the following instructions: "During Dry modes, remove the upper drain plug from the back of the unit and install the drain hose"
Based on my experience, you can operate in DRY MODE without attaching the drain hose as there is a 'water collection tray' that will collect water from the unit that the user can then drain using the lower drain plug.
Ive also used the DRY MODE without disconnecting the duo vent hose but there is NO specific instructions (other than a pic in the Water Drainage section) that the hose must be disconnected when using in DRY MODE.
2nd glaring oversight: <Page 19 of manual> Store the Unit When Not in Use <Page 19 >
"Drain the unit’s water collection tray according to the instructions in the following section."
The manual NEVER provides any instructions on how to access and clean the water collection tray beyond the following: :Run the unit on FAN mode for 12 hours in a warm room to dry it and prevent mold"
Is the water collection tray not removable by the user? How can I disinfect beyond running on FAN mode for 12 hours or add bleach to ensure I don’t have mold growth?

I purchased a midea that was 8000 btu and it just didn't cut the heat. We have a used 5th wheel that we live in after a fire took everything we had, the 5th wheels ac and heat didn't work, after having them fixed several times, we decided to get a portable ac, which was the first one I mentioned and it didn't cool the trailer, well the next year we got the duo model, let me tell you it kept our trailer cool all summer and now it's winter and heat works great. The only thing wrong is it's very loud tv has to go up and down in sound.and when installing it to the window the hooks broke.

Works great but needs a firmware update

So far it's been cooling really well. Of course the inverter technology is really nice. One really nice feature is it will actually fully turn off if your room gets to the set temperature. And when it gets too hot again it will turn the fan and compressor back on to cool it. My only complaints I think are software related. It has some really weird fan curves, sometimes it ramps up to high then goes back down causing me to wake up in the middle of the night from sudden changes in sound. Sometimes when the compressor kicks on it shakes the whole unit for a quick second also causing noise from the hose shifting. Also when it runs fan-only it has that same issue as other units where it's very musty smelling. The app is has that cheap Chinese feel and isn't polished like the LG app. Still not a big deal but just something to be aware of. Most of the complaints are software/firmware. Still highly recommend and is on-par with the LG dual inverter

Expensive with Basically No Warranty

Worked great for a year and a half until it stopped blowing cold air. There's a 3 year compressor warranty and a 5 year sealed system warranty (includes components retaining refrigerant). Unfortunately, you're required to get a technician to write a "tech report" to confirm the problem in order to take advantage of those warranties. I called every HVAC tech in the area. NO ONE works on portable ac units. They all said it doesn't make sense to do so economically and "everyone knows that". Still the service rep i was emailing with refused to move forward on any warranty without a tech report despite not knowing any establishment that can actually provide such a thing for a portable ac. So, if it breaks you're buying a new one (like i had to)
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
