Started on fire burned to top

I like the grill but mine started on fire and ruined the finish on the top cover. I only owned it 4 months and had one for over 4 years never a problem. I doubt Traeger will do anything for me.

Hi, and thanks for your review of the Traeger Ranger. Depending on where the fire occurred, it could be either a grease fire or a pellet fire. However, if it mostly damaged the lid and got hot enough to burn the coating, it is likely that the fire was grease related. To prevent something like this from happening, there are a few simple precautions that can go a long way for keeping your grill safe. The first is making sure that any covering on the drip tray, whether it is a tray liner or aluminum foil, is in good condition, completely flat and not hindering grease flow. Additionally, it is also important that the grill is regularly maintained so that grease and soot are not allowed to build up on the interior walls and grate. Even what might seem like dry, harmless particles and residue could liquify and ignite during a cook. But if you believe the fire was related to something else, or you just want to go over your grill with someone to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen again, then please consider reaching out to Traeger Customer Service. An agent can check everything with you and even use the camera on your smartphone for a live video feed so that you both can look at the grill together. Our lines are open every day of the year until 10:00 PM MT, so we should be available whenever it’s the right time for you.

I have had great success with the Ranger. Traeger upgraded me after my Scout (discontinued) refused to keep temp. Very happy with the Ranger.

Great little pellet grill that can

3 years now and I love my Ranger portable pellet grill. So compact I can set it up almost anywhere. Always use it when camping but even when I am helping one of my adult kids with painting or moving I can set it up on their deck and throw on some chicken kabobs, steak or pork chops. Temperature probe removes the temptation to open it so cooks efficiently. A bit heavy but solid and dependable. I have used every square inch of cooking space with good even cooking. I am biased towards Traeger with five years of use of my Ironwood 885.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Good Workhorse, Hard to Clean, Temperamental
on March 21, 2026

I have had this a year and a half. So far it has been a fantastic work-horse for smaller jobs, like smoking a salmon fillet, a rack of ribs, tri-tip, or whole chicken. Because the heat source is so close and the compartment so small, meats can reach temperature faster than desired when you truly want a slow cook. Recently, the auger has jammed, so I will need to get this fixed or learn to fix it myself.
This grill great for taking on the road! I recommend a folding stand that can bring it to waist level. One downside of this grill is fat drainage. The plate is also the drain, so fat and sugars can get burned onto the plate, and keep fat from draining out to the drip can (in the back). Instead, fat will often become trapped. In the case you want to bring heat up to 400 degrees, it can become a fire hazard and needs to be watched CLOSELY! I have had my grill catch fire several times. I recommend not going over 350 if it can be helped, but definitely do not walk away if you put the temperature above 350.
Lastly, it is difficult to clean. Because the compartment is small, and the heat plate can get caked within 2-3 uses, it needs to be vacuumed and cleaned often. Overall, I enjoy it for travel, but not as much for home cooking.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Potential fire hazard
on May 19, 2026

I am disappointed with this treager because it catches on fire every time I used and has ruined many of my dinners can’t turn it up past 225 degrees or it cause a fire It’s a hazard and now the hot rod don’t even heat up any more. I am disappointed with the table top ranger, I had a bigger treager that worked great so that’s why when I move in a smaller place I got the table top. Just wanted to warn people it catches fire when turned on over 275.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hey Cherry, thanks for bringing this to our attention. We understand how concerning and frustrating it is to have repeated flare ups during cooks, especially when meals are being ruined and the grill is no longer heating properly. That is not the experience we want for our customers. Based on what you described, this can happen when airflow inside the grill becomes restricted from grease, ash, or debris buildup around the firepot and internal components, which can lead to excessive heat accumulation at higher temperatures. We recommend fully cleaning the firepot, drip tray, grease management system, and surrounding air channels to help restore proper airflow, and if a flare up occurs, keeping the lid closed so the grill can complete its shutdown cycle safely. Since the hot rod is also no longer heating, we would like our team to review the ignition system and overall grill performance further with you. Please contact us at +1 800 TRAEGER so we can continue assisting and help get you back to cooking confidently. TRAEGER

Other than the weight (a little heavy) this has to be one of the best additions to our travel trailer we have made in a long time. We already have at home a series'22' Traeger that we dearly love and this Ranger completes our current needs. Keep up the good work a Traeger family.
