Need to be familiar with Sergers

The machine doesn't work as smoothly as the serger I had before, but mine was destroyed in a house fire. It's also noisy. The book would be impossible to understand if I did not previously have a serger. Words on one page, pictures on the next, etc. Very hard to understand.

Works well at first, but Fragile Cheaply made

Out of the box, sews beautifully. But it takes very little to bend any one of the cheaply made moving metal parts in the intricate system. Stitching across the top of another seam was enough to snag the thread and bend the metal on the lower looper, causing it to jam & throw out the tension in the upper looper. No shortage of YouTube videos about this issue, so we quickly realized it is a common problem. Further investigation revealed that it not covered under warrantied service. With less than an hour of run time, we spent over 4 hours diagnosing & repairing the issue. And by we I mean my husband, with mechanical prowess, endless patience, willingness to wear 2 pair of reading glasses & get out his tiniest tools. It’s sewing beautifully again, but unless you too have an in-house mechanic/angel who takes kisses for payment, I’d pass on this machine. I should have done my research, rather than trusting the brand generations of seamstresses in my family have relied upon. Brother has compromised their quality & integrity.

Good machine. Recommend as your first serger.

I have sewn endless hoodies and t-shirts. Watched some YouTube videos for tips and tricks. Highly recommend doing so before you make a decision.
Seems fairly basic but has handled everything I have used it for. The arm thing is difficult to use. Average women's wrist sleeve stretches fabric and it sits tight causing a wavy serge. It is hard to see with the metal foot and it's tight quarters.
Easy to thread but again, watch some videos as the manual shows a wrong direction (an over vs under) causing issues for me. It also does not quiet demonstrate how to pull the threads under the foot after the last thread point. If it is set wrong, it will not sew correctly.

love my 1034D

There is a learning curve, but don't give up...it's easy once I got the hang of it. Best advise I can give is to label all of the knobs..I took sticky notes to do this..made it so much easier to get around. Easy to thread the machine once you learn how. I was making things more complicated than they needed to be, it's simple once you get through it.. and seriously if I can do it you can to.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great Buy for the money

I am very happy with this machine. I was looking for a basic serger and this one fit the bill perfectly. It has a really easy threading system which is also a feature I was looking for. Does a nice job and I couldn't find a better price. This is my first Brother purchase and I am very impressed with their products. I would definitely buy Brother again.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great Machine at Great Price!

I did a lot of research on sergers before choosing this one, and I'm so glad I did! I'm fairly new to sewing, and here are the things I was looking for: low price, sturdy, enough functionality to take me through the next stages of my sewing hobby, easy to use. I got my 1034d and started using it straight away with the thread that came with the machine. I made a knit tunic in a couple of hours! Learning how to thread the machine was very straightforward, and I got it on my second try, using a combination of the manual and some Youtube videos. I was intimidated by the idea of using a serger, but now I feel very confident! So far I've only used a 4-thread overlock stitch for sewing seams on knits, using the all-purpose foot.
I would recommend this to a friend!
