I purchased this product because of the good reviews and also the great price for a serger. I have sewed for many years but had no experience at all with a serger. After unpacking the machine, I felt nervous about using it. Before I did anything more, I read the manual that came with it (twice) and then also watched the video (twice). I'm glad I did because I have had no problem at all threading the machine or using it. There are also some very good U Tube instructional videos online that are very helpful. If I can learn to use it so easily, anyone can! Just take your time with it and enjoy it.
I got my first serger for a late Christmas present in May 2015. I failed to test it out of the box because of a fear of making a mistake. When I finally completed the test in Oct, I found that I had a problem that required me to return it for service. I received it back in about 10 days and have been using it everyday since. It is easy to understand and the instruction CD's are very helpful. Now I have two Brother machines: sewing and serger. Would recommend it to all levels of sewer. Learning about all the features will continue.
I haven't had the time to learn all this machine has to offer but so far I am loving it. The price was the best I could find anywhere. At first I was intimidated by the machine and threading but it was not difficult at all. Now everything looks professional. Highly recommend this serger!
I replaced my 20year old serger with this machine. I am extremely satisfied. The setting recommendations are on point. Threading is so easy. It states it is a little louder when running than more expensive models, but it actually is quieter than others. My only concern is in the long run how long will it last, I use it constantly. I do not have simple weekend projects. I make dance costumes as well as everyday clothes. When I sew, I sew for hours and this machine never skips a beat.
I ordered my first ever serger last month and I am thrilled by how many stitches are on the Brother 1034D. It worked well right out of the box. Rethreading is a breeze! I wish there was a Mac CD as I couldn't play the one that came with it, but I found an official-looking video online that explained everything. I'm so happy with my choice of and entry serger.
This serger is a good buy for the price I paid. I love the handle for the presser foot. Best thing about the whole machine. There are a few things that could be improved on however. Lint builds up very fast on the lower loopers and must be cleaned after every use. It is difficult to clean out underneath but if the whole end could be removed easily it would make it possible to get out lint that has traveled into the mechanics. The machine is quite noisy but it doesn't affect the beautiful stitch it makes. Also the tray that catches the "cut off" is rather flimsy and doesn't catch all the lint like it should. A swing out presser foot would make threading needles easier. I guess I'm spoiled as I have had a Serger for 28 years that had the swing out foot, heavy duty tray, and ability to open up the lower loopers for cleaning and oiling. But that machine is now deceased and the new 1034D is satisfactory as it is a price I can afford and it has been pretty easy to operate.
I was very concerned about threading -have heard horrible horror stories! Well first time threading - easy, a snap - wish I had purchased this a lot sooner. I love this machine!
