This is my first serger. Honestly I was so nervous to try a serger after my mom told me her problems with her serger (NOT a brother machine). She would spend 5 or more hours trying to get the settings right, a lot of frustration, having to walk away and ends up not using her machine. After reading a lot of reviews etc I decided to try the 1034d. I was pleasantly surprised. It worked great right out of the box. It only took me 2 tries to get the threading right. I have made so many projects with my machine, switching back and forth between settings and never had any issues. Works like a dream! It makes my sewing projects go faster and takes them to the next level. I absolutely love it. Needless to say my mom now wants a brother and my intimidation is gone.
I have had a sewing machine most of my adult life, but could only sew a straight line. I have always wanted to make my own clothes, so I recently bought a new seeing machine and serger. The serger scared the heck out of me, but after having it for the past month and making four dresses, a t- shirt and a quilted table runner, I wonder why I didn't get one years ago. The Brother 1034d is easy to thread, understand and use. I'm thrilled with it, and see a lot more sewing in my future.
I don't want to make this a bad review. I originally owned a 1034D serger for about 8 years and it was a work horse. I loved that machine. It finally broke down. I purchased this new 1034D and I never could get it to work correctly. I had to take it over 2 hours away to have it worked on. It cost me 1/2 of what I paid for it to have it repaired. The timing was off on it. I have started working on a craft project that requires me to serge through many layers and over a zipper end and this model machine can't handle that. If you just need basic surging this model is great. I've used my original machine to sew 100s costumes for a repertory theatre I'm the costumer for. So yes this is a very good machine. I just got a slight lemon this time and don't think it can handle what I'm doing now.
I am so happy/lucky to have a Brother Serger 1034D

The problem is ... since I've taken it out of the box, I haven't even turned the power on. It is very intimidating. I'm searching for videos/tutorials to help get over my fear of turning it own. In the meantime, I'm throughly enjoying my Brother "Project Runway" Limited Edition sewing machine and especially my Brother PE-770 Embroidery Machine. I'm a Brother fan!
I'm not sure if I love my machine or not. When it works properly it's a nice machine for a good price but, I've had it for only a few months with light usage and already the needle plate broke. I'm in a group for this machine and apparently it's common. After the needle plate was changed out it's been working fine. It's very easy to thread. I have yet to try it on any heavy fabric to say weither or not it can handle it. So far I'm just not sure how I feel about it.
