It's made of white MDF but does look okay. Didn't realize it would come in so many pieces needing assembly. Heats the immediate area satisfactorily, but as far as heating around 400 sq ft, I don't think it does. It really is a very small fireplace! The fan on it is fairly quiet, and the "fire" effects are good, top marks for that. Glad I bought it on sale though, because I don't believe it's worth the full price. Overall, I'd say it's a good space heater. My only big negative is with delivery, took much longer than expected and UPS kept changing delivery date. I think if another carrier would have delivered, delivery would have been better. Also, they left outside in the rain and never rang doorbell or knocked, good thing we heard the vehicle in the driveway. The box was damaged in several places too, but fortunately no damage to the pieces inside.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
