Great sound, inferior covering.

I purchased these headphones a few years ago (before they were discontinued) mainly because I had a pair of Audio Technica headphones that I purchased in the 1970's, and I loved them. If I have good luck with a particular brand of a product, I will usually buy that brand again. While these ATH-40fs headphones still sound good, I have been truly disappointed with the inferior vinyl covering material that was used for the top headband and the ear pads. The material started disintegrating within the first two years, and within another year was in such bad shape that it all came off revealing the black cloth covering underneath. I am not a musician, and I only used them occasionally to listen to my stereo when other family members were sleeping. I can only imagine that had I been a professional who used them daily, the inferior covering would not have lasted a year. For as much as I paid for them, I expected better. I cannot, in good conscience, label them a good value. I have friends with less expensive headphones, and they have held up much better with similar use. I have purchased other great AT products in the past, particularly, turntable cartridges for my vinyl collection, but this headphone experience has tainted my overall satisfaction with the company. The thing that really changed my mind about the company was the fact that when I emailed them about the vinyl disintegration, they offered to sell me new ear pads. Really? Planned obsolescence? No thanks.

Cons: Poor Quality Vinyl Covering
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

nice clarity, fast precise articulation in bass-lines and just perfect mids with, little to no atenuation to the highs about a 2 years of loud listening leves and no problem at all.

Sound Quality

I have two sets of the D40fs headphones. I feel as if the sound quality is outstanding and another advantage/benifit is the comfort and price. Will add 2 more sets by q1 2012 and there no need to compare, extremly pleased with this item. The ability to swivel is very nice, just make sure all parties using the headphones have been in studio once or make sure they are trained not turn the wrong way. I have not had fault with this feature but picky about who uses the equipment.
Pros: Casual Listening, Comfort, Sound quality, Studio, cable does not bind or knot

For Electronic Drums

I purchased these to replace the phones that I was using to play and record digitally my Roland TD drums. I purchased several mid range headphones and what I found was that most of those phones made the bass drum and toms sound artificial. Each made those 5k drums sound like a cheap set of E-Drums. None reproduced a true "acoustic drum" sound. One option was those "drummer only" phones but that wasn't something I was really interested in. I am using them as monitor phones as well. My local store did not have the ATH-D40fs in stock so I decided to trust the good folks at A-T and went ahead and purchased them online without auditioning them. The ATH-D40fs' bass gives me a nice thump and the "drums" sound more natural to me. They are comfortable, and in the 8 or so months I have been using them they appear to be well made. I like them for what I needed them for and I am 100% satisfied with this purchase. I have been playing drums non-professionally for around 50 years. I am 53. I have a pretty good idea what acoustic drums sound like and these phones can give you that wood shell sound. Sure the Roland TD module has some awesome sounds on it which helps. But I found out after several sets of headphones that the ATH-D40fs reproduce the wood shells and cymbals accurately. Recommended for E-Drums.

I got a pair of these for school, and at first they are quite impressive. The sound quality is great. I have no complaints about that except that mixing on a DAW with these gives you a nice thick bass response, ( as they're designed to do ) that can cause problems when you go to your near fields to finalize the mix. My gripe with them is the quality of the non-essential parts. I do not throw things around etc. and am very careful with my equipment, but the cord at the quarter inch end was cutting out within a week despite the wrapped metal coil designed, (presumably) to prevent just that problem. Also the swivel feature is contingent on a very small round flange of plastic that when worn, (and trust me general use will wear this) causes wear down enough to be insufficient to hold the ear piece on, or in my case cause a stress fracture that breaks off a small piece, (see submitted picture) leading immediately to the same end result. It's a shame really. Lastly, and this is absolutely no fault on the part of Audio-technica, if you're Irish like me and plagued with large ears, ( Luckily for me, I have a large Irish head to even this out) the ear piece surrounds are not large enough to fit around my entire ears, leading to premature ear fatigue. Or at the very least, the feeling you're wearing them long after you've taken them off. Schadenfreude suggests that you may now laugh...
