Peace of mind never felt so good!

If you're like me, taking off on a big MTB ride or adventure in the backcountry always makes me a little nervous! All the what-ifs can be scary, even if you feel highly prepared. Well, look no further for affordable, reliable peace of mind. This little satellite communicator fits into just about any pocket, is extremely lightweight, and has worked every time. Now my family and I know that no matter what I'm doing I'm able to be fully safe and in-contact with the world if I need to be.

An essential for solo hikers

I got this primarily to give my wife peace of mind while I go out hiking usually on my own. I can message her from literally anywhere and I can turn on tracking so she can see where I am at any given time. There is also a mapshare/group tracking feature that allows you to share your location to as many people as you like via an online map. All that is needed is to share a link to your personal map. This was a wonderful perk that I used while climbing Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams with friends this past summer. It allowed all of our loved ones to track our location live. Everyone in the group and their families greatly appreciated this feature. And of course, there is the SOS button which will call for help in dire situations. I knocked off a point because of Garmin's somewhat lack-luster user interface. This has been my experience across many of their products. It doesn't feel terribly polished or streamlined, but it does the job just fine.

When paired with the Garmin app on a phone, this little sat communicator is extremely easy to use. I take college and high school students on backpacking trips, and the Garmin mini gives me peace of mind in the backcountry. Unfortunately, I have had to use it in an emergency, but thankfully, with good communication available, everything worked out the best it could have.

Confusing product with too many hidden fees

This product is confusing to navigate. You might click on something in the app to explore menu options that ends up charging you without first prompting you (like weather service). I have no idea if I can export tracks with this, so I still need to carry my GPS with me. In-reach to in-reach texts are incredibly delayed and add up quickly if you don't have an unlimited plan. I wouldn't recommend getting one of these to be able to have anything but delayed check-in communications once in a great while and, importantly, for the SOS button (which I have yet to use).

Can't believe I ever backpacked without THIS!

"Oh, I don't need a satellite communicator....pretty sure my friend has one or at least maybe there would be someone around if needed." Literally the same mantra I told myself many times pre-trip while trying to justify the price of this unit. All it took was a single close call in the backcountry 8 miles up a mountain with a swarm of ground bees for me to realize that not a single friend had a satellite unit, nor was there anyone around to help as the bees swarmed and stung nearly everyone in my group. I froze in place as someone who is allergic and just prayed that the bees didn't come for me!! It was that moment that I made the decision to finally spend the money and get this piece of equipment because at the end of the day, you can never plan for everything!
The unit itself is very easy to use and with the provided carabiner is easy to attach to backpack straps so that the unit is always accessible (this was critical when I fell trying to cross a large logjam and nearly broke my arm, leg and punctured my lung!). From the obvious SOS feature, to sending the equipped check-in messages to family and friends, having the flexibility to message family and friends in the event of emergencies, or even the ability to get an up-to-date 24-hour weather forecast based on your exact coordinates....I would HIGHLY recommend this unit to any backpacker, hiker, or other outdoor enthusiast for those times you find yourself with zero cell service!

Flawless

Used this for a two week archery hunt in North Idaho. Was able to keep in touch with the wife and kiddos at home. It was super fast on clear days and would send and receive in as little as 1 minute. Blew me away when I was expecting a half hour or so before messages. Cloudy days were slower and sometimes had to try multiple times to get messages out. Size is great! I strapped it to my pack with the provided carabiner and never knew it was there. Works in conjunction with Garmin Messenger app and was very quick and easy to setup. It was nice knowing the SOS was available if any emergency was to happen. It's a piece of insurance to have when in remote areas. Overall I'm very happy. Just wish the service plans were cheaper.

This device is great piece of mind when you are out of signal and would rather not have to chop your arm off in an emergency. The small size means that attaching it to your pack with the included carabiner is not cumbersome, and keeps it within reach if you need to access it quickly. Messages received from the unit come through as a text that one can reply to, and come with a link to the sender's GPS location. Sending messages using the Garmin Messenger app on a paired phone is really straightforward. Sending messages from the device is a bit more cumbersome but doable - it's definitely worth setting up pre-set messages from the desktop profile to save time. The battery lasts extremely well if it is mostly kept off, and only turned on for messaging or weather etc. Side note, if you have errors when registering the device, make sure your address and country information matches that on your existing Garmin account/profile, if you have one. The error message itself probably won't mention it explicitly. I wouldn't really get this as primary navigation device, but as an emergency tool and satellite communicator it works very well.
