A Must-Have for Serious Hikers

I've recently added the inReach® Mini 2 Compact Satellite Communicator with GPS to my gear, and it has quickly become an essential tool for my outdoor adventures. With my upcoming John Muir Trail (JMT) hike in August and future plans to tackle the Appalachian Trail (AT), Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), and Continental Divide Trail (CDT), having a reliable communication device is non-negotiable. Here's why the inReach® Mini 2 stands out:
Compact and Lightweight
The inReach® Mini 2 is incredibly compact and lightweight, making it perfect for long-distance hikes where every ounce counts. It easily fits into my backpack or even a pocket, ensuring it doesn't add unnecessary bulk to my gear. Despite its small size, it packs a punch in terms of features and functionality.
Reliable Satellite Communication
One of the key reasons I chose the inReach® Mini 2 is its reliable satellite communication capabilities. In areas with no cell service, this device provides peace of mind by allowing me to send and receive messages, share my location, and even trigger an SOS in emergencies. Knowing I can stay connected with family and friends, or call for help if needed, is invaluable, especially on remote trails like the JMT, AT, PCT, and CDT.
Advanced GPS Navigation
The inReach® Mini 2's GPS functionality is top-notch. It offers accurate tracking and navigation, which is crucial for staying on course during long and challenging hikes. The ability to preload routes and access detailed maps on the go helps me plan my journey more effectively and navigate with confidence.
Long Battery Life
Battery life is always a concern on extended hikes, but the inReach® Mini 2 impresses with its long-lasting battery. Whether I'm on a weekend hike or a multi-week expedition, I can count on this device to keep me connected without the constant worry of recharging.
Versatile and Easy to Use
The interface is user-friendly and straightforward, making it easy to send

tried and true. Reccommended everyone who spends time in the backcountry to have a device like this in their pocket. This functions as advertised and is small enough for any trip. Love the ability to text and get weather reports.

Have been using this for a while now, and weather it be backcountry hiking in the summer or ski touring in the winter, it's perfect to coordinate with others when there's not cell reception (made even easier through the app you can download on your phone and pair with it).
Have thankfully never had to press the SOS button, but some other friends who have praised the coordination of rescue services.

Haven't had to use the SOS function (knock on wood), but have used the preset notes to let spouse know I was on the move, and/or done for the day. The most useful thing so far has been using it with the app & phone to communicate with trip mates while out of cell range. Worked while we were all driving through the mountains on the way to the put-in coming from different directions. Also worked on the river when communicating with members that were hiking and meeting up with the rafts at camp.

I bought the original delorme inreach 13 or 14 years ago and have sworn by it ever since. With the upgrade to the Mini 2 it's now smaller making it easier to always have in my pack or car. I think this device should be in every outdoor enthusiast's kit!

I used this up in yellowknife on the tibbitt-contwoyto winter road. I was able to message dispatch regarding broken down equipment, and my friends and family had 24/7 access to my location for piece of mind. Pro tip: If you give your mom the inreach number she will use up all of your satelitte messages saying good morning and good night. battery life is great, but I did have access to 12v power the whole time. easily lasts a week in the tundra at 30 minute tracking intervals.
