Inreach mini 2 - sea kayaking
on July 16, 2024

I purchased the inreach mini 2 in 2023 to be able to mainly keep in communication with family while kayaking with others in the backcountry. While messaging and SOS are the main reasons for the purchase, it has also come in quite handy for map use while out on the water.
I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a similar use.

The technology is really great for tracking and planning, but if you only want the emergency SOS feature, your phone is becoming a reliable source for this alone.

I used this device while I hiked the PCT. I got it about 300 miles in so I used the garmin for about 2350 miles. I loved this device and I kept me comfortable that help was only a button push away. I never had to hit the SOS but I did see other saved because of it. So for me it worked great everywhere I need it. Messaging was easy from my phone. Especially since I had preset messages to send to my family to keep them connected and comfortable when I was in sketchy sections. I do have to ding the garmin though because of the hefty subscription price. Still I'd highly recommend
For some insight. I did not buy the garmin myself. Someone ahead of me on trail died so my family pitched in and got it for me and I'm glad they did.
In the picture: Sierra Mountains in California and the garmin is on my backpack chest strap.

Perfect for all our adventures and trips. Used on a kayaking trip in B.C. Exceeded our needs and expectations. Having SOS gave us peace of mind on our trip. It's easy and compact to clip onto any bag or accessory loop. Very user friendly and easy to use.

The inReach mini 2 is a wonderful device. It has the right amount of form and function for everything. I haven't had an opportunity to really use this yet but I did test it out boating and it worked very well and is exactly what it is supposed to.

THE device to get for outdoors adventures away from cell service.
I've used this device in remote areas throughout Utah and Colorado, and never had an issue with sending check-ins to my family, including in steep canyons, dense forests, and in the desert. The battery will last for most recreationalist's trips, especially if you utilize another device for tracking and just use this for communication.
The explore app can be a little buggy, and syncing a little clunky, but once you set it up once, it really doesn't require a lot of fiddling. Check-Ins are simple, and preset messages are also easy to send on the device. Texting through your phone is okay, but it's not like you'll be having full conversations. Thankfully, I haven't had to use the SOS feature, but the piece of mind of have this not only for me, but for others on the trail you may encounter, is priceless.

Luckily haven't 'used' it yet for an emergency. Is definitely nice to have in the back country both for work and play. The subscription service is a tad pricey if you are attempting to use it as anything more than an SOS beacon.

better battery, better antenna, miss old preset text

smaller, light, more reliable, longer battery life than inreach se. better user interface than messenger for back country users. only downside is loss of user defined preset text messages. would like to see some mounting options, too.
