Garmin just completely changed their subscription model to basically double the cost without any discernible benefit for such fees. With the increase in capabilities from other device manufacturers, the non-commercial consumer has no businesses paying for their devices. Given my experience, I will forego buying any additional products from this company. I was looking at purchasing a new watch to go with my new device. I will not invest another cent in this company. I would save your money and look elsewhere. Rarely have I been this disappointed with a purchase from here (go motive->experticity->expertvoice), but this is absurd.

I have taken it with me so many times and I am yet to use it other than to send some texts to my dad and check the weather once but it makes me feel a lot better. It uhas been taken all over the place rode on the handlebars of my bike across the country and in the bottom of many bags yet I could put it right back in the box and call it brand new

I do a lot of exploring on my own, and the inReach device has been amazing. I have used it at both Olympic national park and Mt. Rainier, and it's worked incredibly well. I have been able to check weather before I go to sleep while camping so I know what to expect the next day, and let my family know I'm doing well while I'm way out of service alone. Having the SOS feature on standby gives me a sense of comfort since I'm on my own.

Easy to set up, easy to use. Plans are a reasonable price and give many options for tailoring to your needs. Without a phone, it does not reach it's full potential as far as mapping and ease of use. So, make sure that you are aware of both the inReach and phone battery on your expeditions.
I would recommend for casual, beginner, and nonprofessional expeditions. As a guide, you would likely need/want a stand alone device with a full keyboard.

The InReach is small but mighty. It has so many features which can be overwhelming at first, so I would play with it for a bit before going on your next adventure. I like how I can easily pair it with the app, and have favorites I can contact easily. I would say it is good for both beginners and experts alike.
