Battery life
on December 19, 2024

I bought the in-reach mini 2 specifically as an alternate communication device for when I take my boat off shore. I was 35 miles off shore and was able to track my position and send messages. The unit I bought was a refurbished in-reach mini 2. My only issue is the battery life is only good for 2, maybe 3 days on a full charge. I'll be sending it back and getting a new one. Otherwise no other issues. The unit came in a generic box with all the parts and instructions. Then I selected a garmin subscription plan I felt was suitable for my wants.

Works great!

It was great to be able to text my wife from the middle of the wilderness. Last time I backpacked, and had to change my route because of lack of water, she was concerned and I only had the preprogrammed messages available to send.

inReach® Mini 2
on December 24, 2024

I bought this a month ago. I took it on my first solo trip recently. The area I was in had near zero cell service. It was nice having the peace of mind knowing that if needed I could reach out to someone for help or they could contact me if needed. The only complaint I would have for this device is more related to the service plans. I won’t be using it every month and wish I could suspend the service in the off times without fees.

Interface is impossible
on January 4, 2025

Its a nice small package but unless you use your cell, it's impossible to write and send a message. Horrible interface. Even the preset massages are hard to send. Creates a dependency on you cell phone which defeats the purpose.

I upgrade to the Mini2

This was a great upgrade, transmits messages much faster than my old unit and the battery lasts close to 2 weeks.

Comes in handy

I got the inReach for ease of mind when I go to very remote places with zero service. I can drop a pin and text my husband. The coordinates and navigation are very accurate. Having it really puts my mind at ease knowing my loved ones and help can be reached easily if needed. Highly recommend!

No plan options for families
on January 9, 2025

I bought a second device for the kids so that they could go on separate trips in the backcountry. I was disappointed to learn that Garmin requires the purchase of an entirely separate account with its own monthly fees for each device. There’s no ability to add additional devices to your plan (unless you deactivate the initial device). They should have some sort of family plan. I returned the device.

Somewhat on the fence with messaging
on January 14, 2025

Sending messages other than presets is a pain, somewhat old fashioned - like doing so over an old flip phone. Have experienced a considerable time lag (hours) in receiving presets even with open skies. Not good on an emergency.
