So far, so good

I purchased this as a way for my wife to track me while I was traveling in the Middle East. Although half of my trip changed due to the current situation, I felt comfortable know that if She needed she could locate me.

Nice size for hiking, but accuracy is questionable

I got this a month ago for an Appalachian Trail section hike. I liked the unit overall, but it has it's quirks. It's nice that it can be used as a stand-alone unit, but it really shines when used with the smartphone app. My only complaint is that sometimes the accuracy is off, and the unit consistently showed more miles tracked than what was actually hiked. One night, I left the unit tied to a tree branch that had a clear view of the sky, and used the smartphone app from my tent. In the morning, the unit showed that I had traveled TEN MILES overnight. Unless I was abducted by aliens, I'm at a loss to explain this phenomenon. The inReach Mini 2 would consistently read 12 miles for every eight miles traveled. I don't know if the overhead canopy of trees made this happen, but it's quite inaccurate at times. It has a habit of creating zig-zag breadcrumb trails on what should be a straight path, this happens also during clear skies in open areas. It's unfortunate that my Apple Watch and iPhone are more accurate than a GPS-centric device primarily designed for precise navigation.

Cumbersome

In today’s world of friendly interfaces for electronics, this device seems decades past due. Having to go to several apps or websites to input messages, and to be so limited and difficult to set up and use, seems ridiculous. I love garmin, but you guys really need to up your game here. PS. To block reviews that are negative by saying there are ad blockers, when the review goes through just fine with five stars, is deceptive.

Great piece of mind.

I picked this inReach up for a solo hunt for elk late in the season. I was going to be heading in to the wilderness area with the potential for weather to be moving in so I figured it was a good option to help keep me in contact while hunting. This worked flawlessly. It was a great, lightweight piece of gear to have on my hunt!

Near Ultimate Hiker Device

I love everything about this device, if one teeny tiny thing could be added this would be epic; a plugin for ear buds and a one gigabyte memory storage for music. That would eliminate my wrist watch, cell phone, and or an auxilary music device, just packin the Epic Garmin Gizmo.

Works if you work hard enough to figure it out

Works but not at all intuitive. Getting to show tracks on Explorer was super frustrating. I eventually posted a question to a large online hiking group. Large numbers of users said they never got to work. I did eventually find Explorer -> device -> setting to enable showing track. It I was “on” just like it should be. I turned it off. I turned it on. Now it works. Buggy software.
And what’s up with needing two apps? Just integrate them for goodness sake!
So yeah, it works. But lots of room for improvement.

I just got back from hunting up in Alaska where there was no cell service. This gave me the comfort of knowing that if anything happened I could reach out and get help. Also, it allowed me to stay in contact with my love ones back home. If you’re venturing into the back country, this is a must. My son uses one also for when he’s out exploring in Arizona and Utah and it’s nice to know where he’s at.

Peace of Mind

I weekend backpack & day hike in the Colorado mountains year round and also do a yearly week long section hike of the Appalachian Trail. Some of the places I hike have no cell reception. This year I had 2 incidents in remote areas (no cell service) that made me question what I would of done if something went wrong. I also want to start out by saying that I always carry essentials in case of an emergency. The first incident was in late afternoon in a remote area of mountain on a rocky trail were a loose rack caused me to twist my ankle to a point where I thought I broke it. Luckily it was not broken and I was able to wrap it and hike out the 4 miles to my car. The second was an encounter with a Moose, I was rounding a bend in the trail and feeding on bush was a moose during rut season, probably 20 yards from me. The moose looked up and me and continued eating but I thought to myself what would of happened if it charged me. As a result of these incidents I wanted a way to communicate to others if I had no cell service and found myself in an emergency situation. I purchased an inReach Mini 2 several months ago and I can not tell you how much that has changed my mindset when I am out on the trail. I am able to check in with my family, along with a map of where I am and also have the peace of mind that if I get hurt that I have a way to get help. I would recommend it to anyone out there whether you have cell service or not. It also has many great features and a way to 2-way communicate.
