Took first hike with inReach. I used the tracking feature and sent checkin messages to wife. This was an area with no cell coverage so my wife was unable to track me with Iphone features, however she got all messages from inReach and was able to track me. Gave my wife peace of mind which makes my life easier.

Versatile tool for family and volunteer service

My Mini 2 is an upgrade from the Explorer+ I have had for several years. I live in the middle of a recreational paradise wrought with potential risks. I ride horseback, cycle, hike, fish, travel Forest Service roads and across the country. I am a local Forest Service volunteer on trail crew and a trail ambassador. The Mini 2 has become the standard backcountry communication tool. I lead/guide national Sierra Club outings and I am often able to share communication with fellow Garmin inReach owners on the outing as well as communicate with the outside world as needed. Our outings administration and health/safety personnel are equipped to communicate efficiently via inReach. I just came from a Sierra Club training that briefed us on the use of inReach Minis and the accompanying cell phone apps. I recently used my new Mini 2 to travel cross country tracking my freeway, state highway and forest road travel to my spouse as well as do daily quick checks even when I lacked cell service. While conducting a national service outing for Sierra Club and the Forest Service clearing trails, I was able to establish a second independent sawyer crew with piece of mind due to the fact one of them had a inReach with which we established communication with each other. I was also able to make contact with our district ranger and local volunteer group without positioning myself for a cellphone signal. I greatly appreciate the extended battery life of the Mini 2, its compactness and easy wearability on a pack and beltloop. I highly recommend the device for piece of mind and a means for communication the need for assistance while recreating away from other means of communication.

I purchased this for two main reasons; the SOS feature and the ability to send and receive SMS messages. I hope not to use the former and the later has been problematic but I solved the problem and it wasn't because I found the answer in Garmin documentation or setup guides. I have been testing the SMS feature with my son prior to embarking on a multi day soon to be multi month journey and he was not receiving SMS messages, only emails from the device or the Explorer app. The problem lies with the way contacts are parsed into the device and the Explorer app. When a message is sent it defaults to the email address if your contact has one entered which means an SMS text is not sent to the phone number. After carefully looking at the contacts imported into the device I noticed an envelope icon in the corner of the contact. That tipped me off. What I then did was add a new contact by manually typing my son's phone number as the new contact which then displayed a text message icon. I tested this contact by sending a canned message and it was successfully received as an SMS and my son was able to reply and that was also successfully received. In the end it was a simple fix/procedure that I spent days researching to no avail. Recommendations; update documentation to reflect what I outlined. Change the firmware/software so contact info can be parsed or selected if there are multiple types associated with a contact.

I bought this and set it up before we went on vacation. We did a couple of test messages before we hit the trail and they came through just fine. But after that, no messages came through at all or came through 2 days after being sent. Very disapointed. Spent a lot of money on the unit and the subscription for the month of May and it did not work. Good thing we did not have an emergency.

Hope I never have to use it! Got it set up and have run a couple tests inside National Park with 0 signal. Both to Garmin and to my contacts. Both responded. Love the very precise gps location it sends.
