Weather and tracking not good
on October 19, 2025

Bought this for an elk hunt in Colorado. Got the top plan with high hopes. Communication with families back home was solid which i liked. Come to find out that the weather forecast it provided was just plain wrong and inaccurate. Got my group caught out in a pretty bad storm with thunder and lightning which had we known was in the forecast we would not have hooked out on the first place. The weather was not just off by a little it had clear skies and wildly different temps than we were actively experiencing. Very disappointed and in my opinion just plain irresponsible. Especially considering 2 hunters were very recently killed by lightning in the same state. Additionally when I tried to share tracking with family and friends their response was that the link didn't work. Almost every time. I love garmin products and I know they're better than this. I put alot of faith in that little device to get me out of a dangerous situation in the event of an emergency and while I didn't have to press the SOS button (thankfully) I lost alot of faith in it. Please, do better. People depend on this.

Thank you for your feedback about inReach Weather. Weather forecasts sent to your inReach device come from weather stations nearest to your current location, but depending on where you are, the station may be further away from your actual location, which can lead to a discrepancy between the forecast and the weather conditions you are experiencing. Other factors such as terrain and elevation can lead to further differences between the received forecast and your local conditions.

As well as here is additional information to ensure that LiveTrack is properly set up to ensure that family members can see your location.

Great size and weight
on October 20, 2025

I upgraded from the larger and heavier explorer version about a year or so ago. I love the size and weight of this product. I also like that Garmin seems to have acknowledged most people will use the phone interface rather than the unit itself for messaging and mapping. My biggest complaint would be reliability surrounding sending and receiving messages. If there are southern facing cliff bands, which there frequently are in the backcountry, then the utility of this device is relegated to just extra weight. I know this is likely a limitation of satellite communication, but it has been a frequent problem during my excursions. The other downside is that you need to make sure you have downloaded the appropriate map databases prior to heading out into an off-grid area. It would be nice if there were regional maps included with our subscription service, e.g. Montana, rather than more specific state databases, e.g. a small portion of the Gallatin range. Having said that, the hardware itself seems quite solid. My full size Explorer just decided that it wasn’t going to charge anymore and that was the end of that.

Went out alone in the remote wilderness for several days and was still able to communicate with my loved ones. Big stress reliever for me and my family

Amazing tech in a palm-sized package.

I like to hike alone so I need a robust risk management plan. The InReach Mini 2 two-way capability is one giant step up from my old, one-way PLB and is the perfect addition to my solo essentials. I feel better out there knowing that help is as close at hand as the In Reach SOS button should I find myself in dire circumstances. And, it's the complete package with its tracking, messaging and navigation capabilities.

This product is great for getting in touch with family while hunting the back country with no service. Been a huge benefit to have this in my pack.

Confidence

Purchased for a trip that included areas with zero cell service. Unit is compact, lightweight, and rugged. As an aging hiker, camper, and four-wheeler, it's great to have a measure of confidence that if help is needed, I'm not solely reliant on cellular connectivity.
