Too hard to get started
on August 19, 2025

From a pure product standpoint, it is small and light, and the battery seems pretty good. From a usability standpoint, I am really struggling to get started. The online manual is very brief, and I haven't yet found a good resource that walks me through features and how to access them. It's pretty frustrating. If you have a friend who owns one and can show you how to actually use it, I'd recommend.

Works well

I used the Garmin InReach Mini 2 on a backpack hunt in Sequoia National Forest. The device works well, but I’m strongly considering returning it. The subscription is expensive, and it’s easy to go over the allotted text messages since the device doesn’t reliably update how many you have left. While T-Mobile now connects to Starlink, it doesn’t yet provide the same reliability for what I needed in the backcountry. For now, the InReach still does the job, but the cost makes it hard to justify.

A must have in the wilderness

My partner talked me into getting this for my Isle Royale backpacking trip. The device paired easily with my phone and enabled me to send messages by typing into it. There is a mechanism for doing it through the device in case your phone dies, but typing is difficult. Finding a satellite signal was easy. It might take a few minutes, but the message would go through. Battery life was good and it charged quickly. I had to quit my thru-hike and get a water taxi - this enabled me to text my partner and have her order one. This made it so easy. It is spendy (device and activation fee), and then you need a subscription. But it was well worth it!

Lightweight, Reliable, & Easy to use!

I recently picked up the inReach Mini2, and my previous satellite communication device was outdated, so this feels like a major upgrade. I've used most of the messaging features, and I appreciate having preset messages ready to send, which conserves battery by eliminating the need to type new messages every time. I carried it with me during a bike trip and a hiking trip this past week, and it gave me and my loved ones peace of mind knowing we're in touch. I haven't put it through the ringer yet, but my initial thoughts are an excellent rating.

Bought it to keep in touch with my mom
on August 22, 2025

I bought this so I could keep in contact with my mother when I am out on long trips. That way I don't have to worry she's laying at the bottom of the stairs while I am out on canoe camping excursions. I mostly have just used the text function which works well. Didn't send my pictures so I will have to figure that out but could be user error. Obviously I could have just used my smartphone on satellite mode but phones break so easily and sure don't like water or snow on them which makes the touchscreen impossible to use. I definitely trust this more than a phone. Garmin also uses more satellites and if I am in real trouble I don't have to wave it at the sky to get service. I do hope the price will come down somewhat, but I do appreciate Garmin going back to allowing us to pause our subscription. That is what convinced me to buy as I only need it seasonally.

Great Device!

The inreach mini 2 is a really good tool to have! The S.O.S. feature alone is worth the purchase in my opinion. Being able to communicate when way out of regular cell service during backpacking, hunting, or any potentially dangerous activity, supplies you and those back home worrying about you with peace of mind! Ive seen complaints about the subscriptions being hard to understand, I did not have that issue. Likewise, people have mentioned they struggle with the messenger app. It seems pretty straight forward to me. However, I do wish that the InReach Mini had the option for weather forecasts without using the app.

Love the comfort of knowing I have the unit. It is a bit cumbersome to learn how to use it and navigate. Once you get it, it is easier to

Safety first!

Happy to have an extra level of confidence going into the backcountry knowing I can call for help if I need it. But more so, it’s for the folks back home to feel better about me being out there. It’s helped my partner and family feel more confident and comfortable knowing that I can check in with them and they don’t worry about me .
