I've used it twice for two camping trips. Very easy to use, especially with the app on my phone. It's nice to be able to text my partner and to know I have communication in case of emergency.

This is almost exactly what I needed. Easy to use and perfect for an emergency.
I just found the "activation fee" and subsequent monthly cost to be a surprise. I really hate this subscription based life we live now and even this is adding another sub to my life...

Control is difficult

Overall, I like the device's functionality, but having to control it through three separate apps makes the experience unnecessarily complicated.
I find interacting with the device confusing due to the following issues:
- The web apps should include more tooltips for better guidance. - Why are three different apps required—Messenger, Explore, and Earthmate? - When I update canned messages in explore.garmin.com, I'm prompted to sync with the device. Clicking the suggested link takes me to a page that simply says to sync using the app but provides no further instructions. When I open the app, there's no visible sync button. - When attempting to connect the device to Earthmate, I select the InReach Mini. The app then instructs me to place the unit in pairing mode but does not provide any instructions on how to do so. - The explore.garmin.com website is frustratingly slow.

I've had Garmin 66i previously and expect this device to be just fine, however under the new subscription plan I need to wait until near hunting season to activate and use / learn. I don't find it feasible to activate twice or pay for 6 months of service before I need to use the device.

This was the PERFECT item needed when hiking into remote areas for long period of time. Gave ability to communicate easily with family that all was well and for them to communicate back easily. Gave a secure feeling that in emergency it was there for communication even when cell phone wouldn't have worked. A must have for any situation you need communication when phone won't work. Great product!

Have not used in an emergency yet, but easy to set up, pair with your phone and use. Absolute must if you are going backcountry or out of cell range for any time.
