I wish there were a better option that works independently of the phone. The device itself works well but the app it uses for the phone interface uses a lot of battery and stays running in the background. I have to "force stop" for it to quit. The 1st time I tried to use the device, the app started to push a software update while I was in an area of spotty connection, which never finished and drained both batteries (phone and inReach) quite quickly. I had to do a factory reset and reinstall the app... I'm not very lucky with Garmin products TBH. I keep the automatic software update option off now and have added a shortcut to "force quit" the app on my phone's home screen. I wish the app was better... I'll keep using the InReach because it's the only option that allows me to text from the device itself.

Must-have electronic for backcountry adventurers

I love the mini inreach (just upgraded from the first gen) and it is well worth the investment. It's so small and lightweight that I throw it in my pack regardless the distance or type of adventure because I'm often outside of service range. I love that I can carabiner it to my shoulder strap (it's small enough to be narrower than the width of a shoulder strap and also not bang into your cheek or get in the way) and there if I need it. Paired with the phone app, this thing is amazing. Easy texting and tracking. Love it.

Great updates over the original version, menu system is much cleaner and easier to use. Upgrade to USB C was much needed as well.

Easy to set up and small and lightweight, I plan to carry the Garmin while hiking in the back country or traveling in areas with no cellphone signal. So far so good in using it to send test messages from the middle of nowhere. Best paired with a phone via Bluetooth for ease of use. Recommend for anyone who is out of cellphone range.

Peace of mind for my partner and I

I like to bikepack solo and I picked this up to share my location with my partner. It's great to have and gives me SO MUCH peace of mind while solo exploring. I even take it with me on my night rides JIC
