Great at doing what it's supposed to

The inReach is a great device, the mini, is particularly good when paired with a smart phone. It makes the texting really easy and the weather forecast option is nice and easy to read.
I put a 8, because switching between devices and plans can be complicated, but that's more on the software side rather than the device. Have no complaints about the device itself.

Little backup buddy

Super easy to set up and use. I like that you can connect your phone and have a full sized keyboard to send messages. Used it on 3 day trip in the wilderness, barely ate any battery (on all day with 15 messages sent/received total, no tracking).

Decent but subscription is a problem

Utilized this for a solo hunt. The product itself is great and worked fine for basic tracking and navigation.
However the mapping garmin explore program is not the most efficient. I've used Base maps, fat map, onx, and forks all of which were by far better but obviously suited for certain things.
I wanted to mirror my explore maps with my onx maps incase I had issues with one of the apps. The explore app on the phone was pointless and consistently bugged out.

Additionally the one main feature I wanted for this piece of equipment in order to use it requires the mid level subscription. As I tried some of the other features that came with my subscription the device continued pending and never updated any info this was with clear skies.

Because of its size there's no reason to not take it with you. It also interfaces with Garmin's explore app which I find way more user-friendly than the old Earthmate app.

Garmin is a company that time and time again has not disappointed. The InReach mini is by far the best product the offer. It's easy to use, reliable, and most importantly affordable. It gives me extra peace knowing that no matter what adventure in on, I always have a backup plan. If you do not own one yet, get one immediately because it's a life saver!
