The InReach Mini works very well to keep you in touch with loved ones and emergency help when hiking in the backcountry. My wife was able to watch our progress during our hike and could tell when we went off the trail, when our pace slowed, and when we stopped for the evening. I will never leave for a hike without it.

Great piece of mind

This work good for communication in the back country. It use it often while backpacking. I have it track me in 20 minutes intervals and my family can see where I'm located. I have tested the communication timing with my wife by time stamping our messages. It doesn't show when a message is sent and received. Most the time messages are fairly fast. Within a few minutes. Occasionally I have had some messages take a few hours to get received by the inReach device from the time it was sent from my wife. I do think this is the best thing on the market that is reasonable price for the average person to use and carry. The next better thing would be a satellite phone and they are much more expensive for the device and plans.

Wont leave home without it

I have used the InReach mini v1 for a while and it was great. The improvements and ease of use of the Mini V2 are excellent. I haven't needed to use the SOS feature, but I have sent texts and have had people track my location. I will not leave home without it if I am going into the mountains on my snowmobile or going backcountry skiing. The monthly cost isn't that bad when you think about how necessary this item is to protect yourself and your family in the backcountry!

The Best Sat Communicator for Backcountry

I used the InReach Mini v1 for years, and was very excited to see the v2 with improvements in every area. USB-C and battery life are huge QoL upgrades. TracBack using visual and audio to get yourself back on trail is great if you find yourself adventuring off into the wood. I'm a wildlife and mycological photographer, and sometimes I might wander off trail for a subject if I can avoid damaging the environment. I personally haven't had to use TrackBack as I'm an experienced woodsman, but this could be useful if you get yourself turned around or for a more amateur adventurer.
