Don't leave the house without it

The Garmin InReach Mini is one of those things in life you buy for a specific reason and it ends up turning into an everyday item. Like most, I bought the Mini for backcountry excursions as an insurance policy in the event I needed comms and didn't have cell service. However, living in the mountains, I keep one in each car because you just never know when you're going to need to communicate and you may or may not have cell service. It had turned into a 'don't leave home without it' tool.

Best little insurance policy

This thing is so light that I forget I have it, which is probably the only drawback - because I forget about it I also forget to keep it charged and ready to go. When I am on an expedition, I love being able to send pre -programmed messages to my loved ones and it's always fun to receive replies, especially when I'm miles and days from having cell service. I wouldn't dream of hitting the trail or the river without this gadget - it's all the comfort of having a sat phone with none of the weight or expense!

There when you need it!

The inReach 2 has an amazing battery life, which makes it perfect for longer outings in the backcountry. It's nice to know that my means of communication and SOS will be there even if it's been days since I was near a charger.
The preset messages are great and an easy way to update family or emergency contacts on where I'm at. It's eased a lot of my wife's anxiety when I disappear all day on a long alpine climb. A simple "I'm delayed, but everything is fine" puts her mind at ease.
When something does go sideways, like when my son lost his car key on a backcountry skiing trip or when his partner's car died at their backcountry campsite, you can count on the ability to clearly ask for help by either using the device's text function (which is a bit fiddly but works) or the Garmin Explore app on your phone to just bang out a text with the same ease as you would when you're in cell service.
I'd highly recommend this to anyone who spends time in the backcountry.

Excellent insurance for the solo adventurers

This thing just works. Big improvement over the V1. It is much easier to turn tracking on/off than the v1. Essentially, you can keep your loved ones updated every 10 minutes if you want someone to be able to track you. It's uses data during tracking, so the easy on/off will prevent you from going over your data plan and racking up charges. It lets you use the improved app on your phone- it's much better for mapping and navigation. Garmin makes great hardware. I've never been badly hurt in the wilderness, but it's very possible it would be terrible to die due to lack of help.

Great product. Gives my wife peace of mind that I am safe in the back country. Tons of great features. I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about exploring in areas with little to no cell service.
