Peace of mind

I purchased this after having a really bad bike wreck outside of cell service, but was lucky with how many things fell perfectly into place for my safety. Afterwards I had a ton of what-ifs swirling around my mind so I decided to quiet them with the inReach. I'm super happy with it, as are my loved ones. If you have any hesitations on purchasing this, don't listen to them! Just get it!

The Garmin inReach is the best compact gps tracking for my elk hunts. I used it to track my location and check-in with the wife during my solo backcountry hunt. Everything worked perfect for me. Highly recommend for any skill level. Turn on and go!

A great option for the backcountry!

I recently used the Garmin Mini 2 over a few backpack trips and hunting season. Knowing I can communicate with my family when I had no cell service gave them peace of mind and a way for me to keep them in touch. It is easy to use with the app and the extended battery life was great! Over 6 days of hunting I only had re-charge the battery once.
The one down side is the monthly expense is kinda spendy for the membership but it is great being able to suspend the account when there are no plans to use it. Worth the cost for me considering the peace of mind it offers.
I highly recommend!

Fantastic Bit of Kit

I have had great success using the tracking and messaging capabilities. Thankfully I haven't had to use the SOS feature yet.
I bought this after I tested out the iPhone's satellite SOS feature in an area with no cell coverage. I found that the iPhone feature would not work well in many scenarios due to how long it takes to send a message and requiring you to hold the phone pointed at the satellite for that whole time. inreach sends the message as it can, and doesn't require you to hold it the whole time! It seems faster in many scenarios than the iPhone feature as well. Very pleased with the ability to update my safety contacts and they can be in the know on my location and movement.
Battery life so far has been excellent, roughly 7-8% per 5-8 hour activity using "detailed" tracking with 10 minute sends. Backlight set to lowest setting without being off. (I'm often using it for night MTB rides or hiking so the backlight is helpful.)
One star knocked off because it marketed that you can customize the free "Check In" messages, but that feature has changed and those are no longer customizable for new users (including me).

Good to stay connected

Great device to send basic messages while on backcountry hunts. Battery ran several days when sending a few messages a day (temps 30-60 degrees). Can be used as a stand-alone but messaging process is cumbersome. Much easier to link to phone and send via app. Subscription based product with an annual fee. I have no problem paying for the service when I'm using but the annual charge irks me.
Never an issue with connectivity. Test out prior to using "for real" to familiarize and get proficient so you can spend your hunt "hunting" not messing with this.

Sailed from Mexico to French Polynesia this spring and used InReach and Messenger app to stay in communication my family back home all the way across the pacific. Was a great backup to an Iridium Go with very similar text functionality. Suspended subscription for a few months and reactivated for another trip. I personally like this subscription model. Very cumbersome to text more than very short or prepopulated messages on the device without a phone.

I was very nervous to solo backpack until I got the inreach. The pease of mine for my wife and I is worth the price.
