I must admit i was quite impressed with this light. Being the size and weight it is it actually manages to sustain its maximum 1000 lumen output very well. This light has no turbo mode and the high setting is the highest setting at 1000 lumens. Out of curiosity i did compare this PX1R to my XP11R which is a significantly higher end flashlight rated at 3000 lumens at turbo side by side with the PX1R on its maximum 1200 lumen high setting and the XP11R on it's 1100 lumen high setting and the PX1R actually held 1000 lumens for quite a bit longer then the XP11R. Which was quite a surprise to me. The XP11R just steps down even from it's 1100 lumen high mode just way too fast.
However, it is worth noting that being able to sustain such brightness levels also with a significantly smaller overall body then the XP11R does lead to the flashlight getting hotter much faster and this is definitely the case here with the PX1R. On the highest mode this flashlight gets HOT and fast. So definitely something to keep in mind but considering how well it can sustain its maximum output i don't really mind that drawback if I'm being honest.
Overall i think this would be a really good EDC Flashlight. The biggest downside I've discovered is that there's no memory mode on this flashlight. I don't think I've come across any COAST flashlights with any sort of memory modes unfortunately. It would be really amazing if the flashlight was to start in the last used mode like low for example rather than always defaulting to medium which can be rather annoying at night if you just need access to the lowest level.
This is most certainly the biggest drawback about it for me. The included battery is just a protected 2600mAh 18650 with a built-in USB-C port to make recharging more convenient but you can definitely use your own higher capacity 18650 if you wanted a longer runtime or if you wanted to swap batteries on the go for when one dies. I'm glad this flashlight does not use a proprietary battery like the Zithion ZX1000 found on the XP11R. While it's just a protected 21700 size battery the negative terminal actually has multiple contacts rendering a normal 21700 battery unusable in it. So your limited to the specialized ZX1000 21700 battery from coast on that light.
This is not the case for the PX1R.
However, i do somewhat understand the need for such a system on the XP11R as the charging port is actually built-in onto the light itself and not the battery. Unlike the battery on the PX1R which needs to be removed in order to be recharged as the light itself does not have a charging port built-in.
However I'm sure COAST could've still done it differently. Like The XP20R for example also uses a protected 21700 battery but it isn't a specialized battery in any way and you are free to use a normal unprotected 21700 battery in that light if you'd like yet that flashlight still has the built-in USB-C port on the light itself too.
Anyways, that's off topic for this review. Just wanted to mention it though and mention that luckily this PX1R isn't limited to a property rechargeable battery. It's great having the flexibility of using different batteries other then the specialized ones.
I would recommend this to a friend!
