The only trick to this item is that you have to take off the solar top and actually connect it. It does not come connected, so at first it seemed like the lights didn’t work. Once we connected it, it lit right up.

Love, love, love it! Great lighting and easy to use. Don't forget to plug in the solar panel (for those of us who don't actually read the directions that come with the product)!
