Slightly Overwhelming

This is a great size for a cycling computer. Not massive like the 1040 but not so small you have to squint to see it. It just has too much going on with the user interface. Not very intuitive or easy to read/see while riding. The actual data screens are very nice and easy to see. This would be more of a tech savvy intermediate to expert rider.

Everything you need

If you're like me, you do t barely look at your computer during a ride. It's just there collecting data. The 540 does that. You can look at it, of course, and it's pretty sweet, but I don't really pay attention to mine. When I do notice it, what I appreciate is that the data screens can be customized to show the stuff you care about, and if you're like me, you limit the number of data fields so the numbers render larger and more readable. I also am annoyed by the touch screens on many newer computers. The 540 is all buttons. What this achieves is that when you do want to adjust something, it's a deliberate action. Not like some rich x teen computers that activate commands when sweat drips on the screen. Buttons since that prob. The 530 is also smallish. Which is you're not going to look at it much, it doesn't need to rival the screen size of your Maxi Phone. Save a few grams with the 540. You shouldn't care about that, either, but the idea just nags at you. So, submit. This jus the computer that's everything you need, and nothing you don't.

Great!... but miss my touchscreen

I have been a long-time user of Garmin Edge products. The 540 is a great device and a nice upgrade from the 830. I thought I'd prefer the non-touchscreen model, but after some use, I miss the touchscreen. This is my personal preference, though. I'm still more than happy with the unit and can recommend it.

Great!... but not perfect

I love the connectivity and light control and the customization, but I feel like the 540 is just an afterthought compared to to the 840. The layout seemed to be perfect for touchscreen but very awkward for button only. Once you start riding it's not a big issue but the initial set up is pretty rough.

Slow learning curve

Purchased about a month ago thought it had touch screen it doesn’t, the buttons are confusing and y tube videos aren’t great but maybe it’s from the generation I’m in. Anyway I suspect enough trial and error should get me there have to ask others for help who gave it as well and again not clear as they have the touch screen. Example did 142 mile bike ride got it downloaded and then I saved it but I can’t figure out how to review the information, and it doesn’t show up on my Garmin app. Hoping I’ll get use to it.

Garmin 540 all what you need without touch screen

It's the type of monitor that every cyclist should have as it has all the features need it for cycling and navigating. It would be great to have more battery life. Easy to link to your phone and previous sensors. Display has all the features needed it and easy to program from your phone. I went for this one to try something without touchscreen. Great bike computer recommended for all cyclists. Love this product

I like the *lack* of a touchscreen

I've been using Edge computers for quite some time now, starting with the Edge 800. I had always chosen computers with touchscreens because I was of course used to using smartphones. Recently, I decided to replace my aging Edge 1030 (it's been dropped once too many times) and my local bike shop had the 340, the 540, and the 840. I chose the non-touchscreen 540 because I have historically had issues where rain or sweat would mess with my screen layout (yes I know you can lock the screen, but I sometimes forget.)
I am happy to report that I really like the menu navigation via buttons on the 540. It does take some getting used to and it's not intuitive (subtract one star here), but once I got the hang of it, I decided it was a good interface.

Worst product I ever owned

Menu navigation has no logic. Buttons have no logic either and are difficult to press. Unusable product.
