Nice Upgrade from the Edge 520
on August 13, 2025
Posted by: mad25
I decided to purchase the Edge 540 because the battery in my older Edge 520 was starting to lose its charge. I also thought the 540 would operate in a similar way to my 520 to ease the learning curve. I've used the 540 for about a month now and am pleased with how it's been working. Yes, the control buttons operate in a similar fashion to the 520 although I discovered the menu layouts are different and it did take some getting used to them. But in the end being familiar with the 520 features did make the learning curve on the 540 much easier. The battery also holds its charge much better. I was amazed at some of the upgrades such as the alerts that pop up warning of trail hazards or sharp turns. So, up to this point I'm very satisfied with the Edge 540.

Great Bike Computer!

While I am still figuring out how to use all of the features, it was quick to setup and start using. The battery life is very good. I was able to customize the display to give me the information I need/want in the way I want to see it. I highly recommend getting the speed and cadence sensors along with a HRM to compliment the unit.

Worked great on a 6 day cycling camping trip
on August 6, 2025

I had no time to figure out my Edge 540 until the trip. With relative ease I figured out how to load gpx files. Just the right amount of information on the map and no need to have my phone out, draining its battery. The feature to have text notifications was very useful. Without any study, I pretty quickly figured out the buttons. Battery life was very good, at least 2-3 days of navigation without a charge. Very happy because I was considering a charging hub but don't really need that with my Edge 540. Easy to remove and install.

I have used this cycling computer for a few rides and love it. Can't wait to use it on my organized ride in 3 weeks. I will be downloading the map for the rice.

It's start-up is fantastic . Fast and smooth and the information is accurate. So far I have no qualms with the device. I would highly recommend.

Solid riding computer

Bought this a month ago and I am enjoying it. Probably should have opted for the touch screen and solar charging but the 540 is a good option for the price. Figuring out the buttons was challenging at first and figuring out how to turn notifications off. I love the data screens and how easily it connects to my power meter.

I use the 540 with road, gravel and MTB. The screen is easy to see and read.
The buttons are a little slick, but I added a rubber case that solved that issue.
Charging is good and I like the USB-C connection. The activity screens are very customizable and you can get up 8-10 data metrics on some of the viewing screens. The only difference from the upper models is bigger screen with touch. I have mine paired with Varia radar/ lights and multiple HR/CAD/PWR sensors with no issues. The battery life is great, longest so far was a 6hr ride that still had 40% left.

Clunky Operation w/ Buttons
on July 28, 2025

I purchased this as backup for my 840. I am long time Garmin user going back to Edge 710. This unit I has nearly the same features as my 840 but operation using the buttons is not intuitive which would be helpful for backup that will be used sporadically. Wahoo Elment Bolt is much more intuitive and user friendly
