I decided to start sewing and chose this machine

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this product for free in exchange for a review for Brother in exchange for my honest review. I brought this over to my friend who is an experienced seamstress who has made wedding dresses. She noted that it was nice that the handle was in the machine. The machine is relatively quiet. There are many stitch options. The speed of the machine is adjustable and that is convenient so that I don't go too fast. The diagrams in the owners manual could be larger as it is difficult to thread. The manual could also be better organized. The cover of the machine has a cheap piece of styrofoam that stays in. There are some good safeties in place. The machine will not allow you to start sewing if hte presser foot is raised. The digital screen is nice to see the settings selected and I can choose the spacing and width of stitches selected. The presser foot does not like working with towel type fabric against it as it has trouble grabbing it and moving it forward.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great machine for the price.

Great machine for the price. Can't claim I've tested every single feature, but it does what 95% of buyers are going to need, and does it well. Couple of little items that could be improved / fixed for cheap. Needle screw - keep as is, just add a small triangle plastic thumbscrew over set screw. Wouldn't interfere w operation, costs virtually nothing, adds 'quick change needle, no screw driver needed' as a feature. Expand / improve official Brother YouTube guides. Shouldn't have YouTubers doing better instructional videos for using your equipment that the actual company. Or partner w one of them and make it your official.

I purchased this machine for a Christmas present for myself. Wow I just love it. It has gone through several types of materials without issues. Sewed quilted jackets, slippers, nightgowns and PJs for the boys. I am having so much fun with this sewing machine I look forward to sewing..

Basically Pleased

I am basically pleased with my machine. It is easily adjustable and suits all my sewing needs. I was disappointed to learn that it could not accommodate tall cone threads ( a feature that I didn't notice before my purchase). I gave about a dozen away to a friend whose machine can use them. The other feature that needs better engineering is the needle threader. It is not easy to use.

Lots of useful features without going overboard.

I had an older Brother sewing machine that worked fine and met the needs I had for fixing a hole in a shirt, hemming some pants, or throwing together a pillow case for the odd sized pillow but recently I decided to add back sewing as a active hobby and became very aware of how many very useful functions were offered by the newer machines. Here are some of the changes/additional functions that, after a month of practicing my new hobby, I won’t willingly give up:
1. A drop-in bobbin. I’m amazed at how much easier it is to start sewing with the drop-in bobbin. Not having to play around with the fly-wheel to move the needle so that the bobbin thread can be pulled up before you can start sewing is worth a lot to me on its own. Running out of thread on the bobbin is no longer the pain that it used to be, since dropping in another bobbin is so simple. Although there can still be hiccups in the process using a drop-in bobbin, it feels like snags and knotting of the threads is less common with the drop-in bobbin.
2. Pre-programmed stitches, each with default values for stitch length and width. Each time you select a different stitch, the most common values are pre-filled. The display also will have a code for the required presser foot, if the stitch has such a requirement. (Of course, having the wherewithal to read the code before you start stitching is something else!)
3. Snap-on/snap-off presser feet. I’ve been wanting this for quite a while. It’s everything I hoped it would be. I often change from a standard straight stitch to a overstitch stitch because a pattern piece is in front of me and has my attention. (Yeah, doing the overstitching for several pieces at one time is more efficient, but that isn’t how my brain works all the time.) Being able to swap out presser feet with little more than a press of a button is wonderful and makes it more likely I will protect the fray-prone edges early, before losing too much fabric.
4. An improved process for filling bobbins. A simple, but very welcome improvement, is that pushing the bobbin that is being filled over to the fullness-sensor changes the sewing machine’s mode so that the needle is automatically disengaged. No more fiddling around with the fly-wheel to disengage it and then having to re-engage it, after you are through.
5. Better design for threading the upper thread. I’m not sure how this was accomplished, but the design of the upper thread path has been tweaked so that the thread tends to be in the correct side of the take-up lever automatically. In the older machines, you would have mess with the flywheel to get the take-up lever in an accessible place to loop the thread around it correctly.
6. Consistent ending position for the needle. When you stop stitching, the needle will always be moved to the default ending position. The normal default is to always end with the needle in the fabric, in the down position. This default can be changed to ending in the up position if you prefer.
7. One-touch button to toggle between the needle-down/needle-up position.
8. Option for automatic stitch speed control. The power pedal can be used to “drive” the stitching, with the speed of the stitching being controlled by the amount of pressure applied to the pedal, just as sewing machines have worked for decades. However, by disconnecting the power pedal, the option to set a control on the sewing machine to determine the speed of stitching can be used instead.
The stitch speed control is a sliding lever near the needle-up/needle-down and reverse stitch buttons. There is also a third button for starting/stopping the stitching. This feature can be a great help for someone without fine motor control in their feet or for those who may find their ability to keep a steady pressure in the power pedal inconsistent. People just starting out may find having a steady, automatic speed very useful while they’re already trying to learn how to maneuver the fabric while sewing.

Brother xr9550 saved my life

I just want to let you know how excited I was about learning Bother sewing machines offered the no foot peddle feature. I am a c6/7 quadriplegic confined to wheelchair with no use of my legs. I love to sew and these Brother machines really saved me by letting me do one of the things I always loved to do. I have been using these machines for about 20 plus years and never had a problem with any of them. I’m on my second one because I wore out the last one. I use it mainly to make quilts. Now I can use both my hands to sew without having to worry about using a foot pedal. Thank you Brother!!

One improvement
on May 29, 2025

I purchased this machine for quilting and garment sewing. It does a great job and offers many stitch options. I did need to purchase some additional feet. The only issue is using the “automatic”needle threader. I’ve been practicing using this feature but I think I was successful only 10% of the time. After multiple attempts I finally manually thread the needle. An opportunity for improvement for sure! Otherwise a great machine.

Poor Overall Design
on November 7, 2024

I was disappointed with the overall design. I don't find this a user friendly machine. Almost everything is plastic, so that I'm concerned about breaking something. The spool of thread is exterior and unprotected. The accessories are in a pouch inside the slide type flat bed and there are more accessories in a plastic bag aside from the machine. The case to cover the machine does not go down to the bottom of the machine. The actual sewing quality is good, but if I had seen this in person and was able to physically inspect the design, I never would have bought it. It was a good price, so I got what I paid for.
