Haven't had time to fully utilized it out in the field for a detailed review yet. I really like what I see so far. I looking forward to putting this unit to good use.

Great Upgrade to the Montana Series
on April 20, 2025

I was looking to upgrade my Montana 680T, which was running slow. I was hesitant to buy the 760i since it's quite a bit larger than the 680i. However, I'm glad I took the plunge. while larger, the 760i is still manageable, but most of all it's highly responsive and accurate. I also like the connectively it offers vs. older Montana models.
One thing I will note is that when looking at the listed accessories, I see the the Tempe has been discontinued. i hope Garmin plans to replace it, since it's useless to have devices with temperature capabilities that don't use an external sensor, otherwise you're not getting an accurate temperature.

Very complicated

I have lots of Garmin devices. Loads of options in this device and inReach options work really, really well. Screen is great and you're going to need the screen clarity to really sort it out. Be sure to set aside 8 to 10 hours to understand the consequences of trying to route a GPS way point using the multiple different settings that are buried in the menus that don't have links between them. Good luck! Garmin, it's time for a top down review or OnX is going to put you out of business.

New to garmin system

Get ready for a 23 day Grand Canyon trip!! Needed a way to communicate back and forth with people at home. Get weather updates . Mapping for side hiking and tracking. Pic taking of camps and rapids to see them on future trips. Have a first gen SPOT for outdoor adventures, problem is if use SOS , people receiving SOS just know there’s been an incident. Now I can rekey more info,, like “I’m Okay, helping other people” Will be using the Montana on a daily basis this winter for snowmobiling in backcountry! I’m a greenhorn garmin user, so things are not very intuitive at times, but being patience has payed off for learning curve!

I bought this new version because the battery was supposed to last much longer than the previous version. It doesn’t!

BATTERY LIFE 760i
on February 23, 2026

The unit if not turned "OFF" correctly by holding power button for a few seconds will remain ON with blank screen still drawing power and when screen is visible you will notice your power has drained "low". Battery life is not ideal to the point of...do not leave the unit powered up when hiking unless you have a recharge source for a backup.

I finally find one that suits me.

I go outdoor a lot and travel. I also visit many natural parks. Many of these places doesn't have cell phone signals. I have looking for a handheld GPS that fits my need. I started with eTreck 32x and soon I decided to sell it because the display is simply too small and the control is very awkward and slow. It is very difficult to move on screen to different location. Then I switch to Garmin 66sr, which a much better gps. I like it very much and use it all the time. However, one week point is that it does not handle driving navigation very well. Then I feel I need a better gps for my travel habit. I prefer some thing that I can use for both hiking and driving. Then I bought a Montana 760i, which I feel I finally find something that fits my need 100 per cent, except one shortcoming, it's bulkier body. But despite the shortcoming, I like to carry it whenever I go out. It's bigger screen really helps. Its driving mode screen looks so good. It looks just like a car driving navigation gps. It's so easy to enter places on the touching screen. It is so easy to browse the map. Many times better than my gpsmap 66sr, suing the cursor to find places. If I giver my rating on these devices I have owned. Three stars for the etreck, four stars for the gpsmap 66sr and Five stars for the Montana 760i,

Good device for backcountry/no cell coverage areas
on March 31, 2026

Wish it came with a dedicated way to secure the device to my shoulder strap but I bought a belt clip/carabiner combo that seems to work. Messages work well. Tracking works. I’m backcountry a lot so trackback is my friend because the map generally is not the territory. Weather and sunrise/sunset get used more than I thought I would. I’d love integrated OnX compatibility but I can export gpx files so that’s good at least. I bring it everywhere now because I live in a low cell phone coverage area. Wish there was more functionality in being able to message non-Garmin registered users (or maybe I just haven’t found that feature yet). One month in and I’m happy I got it, well worth the $
