I thought it was the most amazing product Id ever owned until the warranty was up and I had to take it apart and clean it. Id been using vinegar and bleach alternately but it would show mold almost immediately so I finally took it apart and GROSS doesnt even come close! It was so bad on the inside...bleach didnt help!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your unit here:https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale.

Great Ice, But Too Many Problems
on May 17, 2026

We really wanted to love the Opal 2.0 Nugget Ice Maker because the ice itself is excellent. The nugget ice is soft, chewable, and exactly what we were hoping for. It also makes enough ice for our family, so from an ice quality and production standpoint, it does a good job.
Unfortunately, the machine has several issues that make it hard to recommend.
The biggest problem is the loud screeching noise it makes. This is not just normal appliance noise — it is a high-pitched screeching sound that is disruptive and makes the machine feel like something is wrong internally.
We are also seeing white scale or mineral buildup leaking through the front of the machine, which appears to be coming from water seepage or internal buildup. For a countertop appliance at this price point, that is frustrating and concerning.
The machine also requires a lot of cleaning and maintenance to keep it running properly. I expected some upkeep with a nugget ice maker, but this feels excessive, especially when combined with the noise and visible scaling issues.
Overall, the Opal 2.0 makes great nugget ice and produces enough for our household, but the ownership experience has been disappointing. Between the screeching noise, scale leaking through the front, and maintenance concerns, I cannot give it more than 2 stars. Great ice, but not a great machine

We want to provide some additional information from you about your Opal ice maker. It is recommended to use distilled water for the best performance. Since you are hearing the screeching sounds, we recommend that you do a full descaling process. It's also important that you have good clearance so that the fan can properly operate. Please review page 8 in your manual for details on descaling. https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf

We’d like to address any issue you're having with your Opal. As you mentioned, we recommend using distilled water specifically, to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. Please note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation.

We recommend ensuring you’re descaling and cleaning the Opal according to the instructions in your manual, linked here: https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf. Care and cleaning information starts on page 7 of the manual. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale. It is recommended that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air about the unit.

We have information about what sounds you may hear from the Opal available at this link: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=35276.

If there's any issue with ice production, we have information about addressing that linked here: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=39628. Among other tips, we recommend unplugging the Opal for 3 to 4 hours before reconnecting, to reset it.

We’ll be reaching out over email to discuss your situation further. We look forward to hearing back from you, so we can assist.
