Awful Noise.
on April 11, 2026
Posted by: Eric 7979
We are in our third 2.0 ice maker and they make an awful “LOUD!!!” Noise that it forces us to get up out of bed to turn it off. I used the App this time but I’m half asleep trying to Find the app I need to turn the thing off so it’s no better than getting up to do it. Super disappointed that GE has done NOTHING to fix this problem.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your unit regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale. It is recommended that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air about the unit.

LOVE the ice, just don’t love that if you don’t get the nice fluffy ice out quickly you get the watery ice and when you pull the drawer out to get said ice you get water dripping out from the drawer! Also, the cleaning button continuously flashes no matter what despite replacing filters which they originally said was a programming glitch that would be sent to through the app and fixed and hasn’t been and that was months ago!? Not happy with all of that for the price the was paid the ice maker!

Best ice maker
on April 15, 2026

I am so happy with my new ice maker. So far it has been the best buy. Its fairly quiet with the occasional noise here and there. It makes ice pretty fast and the ice is perfect shape and easy on the teeth. Setting up is a snap! Wifi setup was easy. The side tank is a great addition as it holds quite a bit of water and makes ice constantly. I havent shut it off since purchase.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Very loud noises that are not easy to fix
on April 20, 2026

The ice machine makes good ice nuggets however every day it will start making a very loud screeching noise that I cant fix.
Response from geappliances.comBy SarahGE_AppliancesApril 22, 2026
We’re glad to hear you’re happy with the ice nuggets your Opal produces, and we’d like to address the issue you’re having with sound. Water hardness can result in a calcium build up that may cause sound, and we recommend using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce build up. Distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. These other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduce the solidification of scale.

We also suggest cleaning the Opal according to the instructions starting on page 7 of the manual; that’s linked here: https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf. The cleaning and descaling process can often help with an issue with sound.

We have information about sounds you may hear at this link: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=35276. If you think the sound you’re hearing isn’t normal, then among the other tips we recommend ensuring there are at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal and that the side tank isn’t covering a vent. We also recommend disconnecting the unit from power for 3 to 4 hours before reconnecting, to reset it.

We’ll be reaching out over email to discuss this situation with you further. We look forward to hearing back from you, so we can assist with your situation.
